fedora core 4 and samba

Okay,

I just installed fedora core 4 on my system. I'm trying to get samba to work.

I can't get smb to actually start unless I disable the SELinux stuff. (I also disabled the firewall in the process.)

So, how should I set this up?

In house network. Behind a firewall. The linux box has 6 old (some not so old) disk drives that are to be accessed from my main machine and my laptop.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Yes, SELinux is akin to voodoo right now. RH/FC ship some default rulesets but they don't cover everything, but I thought they had it setup so that any daemons not covered by the ruleset were placed in a compatibility group so that they could run as if SELinux wasn't there at all.

If the box is on a local network that's also behind a firewall disabling the local firewall shouldn't be a problem. But adding rules to allow the smb ports shouldn't be a big deal either if you know them.

Heck with it. I switched to ubuntu. Loaded it up as a server. Took me about 45 minutes from the insertion of the CD to having working samba.

Thanks for your help.

What? You took the easy way out? You're no fun... 😉

I'm happy to see another Ubuntu user (and indirectly another Debian user) but you could have had the same results with FC if you had just disabled SELinux and the firewall, most likely anyway.
