Fedora 12 gvim fonts - How can I make them better?

I'm forced to use ancient fedora 12 due to some reasons. The gvim fonts look like crap. I tried to make them better using some links I found.

To summarize - I installed freetype-freeworld, and installed ubuntu fonts and set hinting to hintslight and subpixel to rgb.

Made no change to gvim fonts. I don't care about the desktop fonts, just gvim over ssh.

Anyone got any ideas?

The left is ubuntu. Nice and smooth. The right is fedora 12. I don't have the original ugly version. I installed infinality and it's a little better but still not as good as ubuntu. The lines are not even.

I've found older versions of Fedora/Redhat look better with traditional anti-aliasing rather than subpixel anti-aliasing, even if you're using an LCD.
