FedEx plans to raise overnight shipping rates
Delivery charge will increase an average of 3.5 percent beginning Jan. 2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - FedEx Corp., one of the nation?s largest shipping companies, announced Wednesday that rates for overnight delivery will increase an average of 3.5 percent beginning next year.

The Memphis-based company said it was raising overall rates for FedEx Express customers 5.5 percent but cutting by 2 percentage points the fuel surcharge applied when oil prices are high.

The rate increase takes effect Jan. 2 and will affect U.S. domestic and U.S. export express package and freight shipments.

More immediately, the company also is changing the rates for customers who don?t have a FedEx Express or FedEx Ground account and ship packages through staffed FedEx locations, including the copy chain Kinko?s.

The company released no other details on the new counter rates taking effect Nov. 7. The change will not affect customers who use FedEx drop-off boxes or those who have FedEx accounts.

The company also will increase delivery surcharges for FedEx Express shipments to some ZIP codes by up to 10 cents per package beginning Jan. 2.

FedEx reported last month that its shipping volume had grown by double-digits in the first quarter.

No surprise. . .they are paying more for gas just like everybody else I'd assume. They can't maintain the same profit margin while paying about 110% more for gas than they did a couple years ago.

Wait, so what percentage of this do the independant fedex drivers see?

Do they pay for their own gas in the first place?
