Fedex overnight not overnight?

Ok, so I ordered a 2 packages from newegg (one sat one today) and put a rush on them. I paid for "FedEx Standard Overnight" shipping. I (obviously) expected them Tuesday since I didn't think FedEx made pickups on Sunday. To my suprise I came home from work tonight to find a FedEx tracking number for each of my packages. They were picked up at 1:18pm 8/5/07. I was stoked that I would be getting them Monday, then I checked the estimated delivery date and it's tuesday.

Now, I understand it's because sunday is not a business day so they aren't counting it as a day in transit. However, it seems if they call it "overnight" and they pick it up on sunday it should be delivered monday. I mean, it's not like I snuck it on a truck tonight and then complained or something. They voluntarily picked it up and gave me a tracking number. It just seems like Sunday night should count, right?

The origin point may work on Sunday, but not the shipping portion of the company.

It depends on when they ship them and how far away.

Also, I bet they didnt actually "pick it up" sunday. I bet they got the reservation from Newegg on sunday. Its all ready to go in a FedEx box with tracking number, but not actually on a white truck yet.

Basically they shipped the packaged in their system with a ship date of today but will ship tomorrow with a delivery date of Tuesday 8/7/07.

Just b/c you received a tracking number doesn't mean they were shipped or even picked up yet.

You are wrong to answer your question.

Dang, my web space at school is down temporarily so I can't upload the screenshot but what it says is:

Fedex tracking informaton for 942......

Package update on 08/05/07 05:11pm Left FedEx Origin Location City Of Industry, CA
Package update on 08/05/07 01:15pm Pickup Status City Of Industry, CA

It says it actually left the originating location (which it probably didn't). Just seems to me if it's not shipping until tomorrow instead of saying it left the location today they should avoid confusion and say "ready for pickup" or something.

You mean why people bitch when they don't get the level of service they pay for? If it left the warehouse on monday and arrived on tuesday I wouldn't complain because it would be overnight. When it leaves on sunday and doesn't get here till tuesday that's called second day.

Let me ask you this. If they picked up my package monday afternoon, it was shipped overnight and the package didn't arrive until wednesday would I be wrong? I understand sunday isn't a business day but if they picked it up it should count.

Or how about if I had paid for same day? They pick up my package sunday, issue a tracking number and put on their site the package left the warehouse but it;s not delivered until monday. I understand it's not a business day but they decided to pick it up on a non business day, not me.

Like I said in the original post I know WHY it's this way (sunday isn't a business day) but it doesn't say "over one business night" it just says "overnight".

FedEx makes it really clear that their service days are Monday through Friday, you can't overnight ship something on a Sunday, so I'm not sure what kind of fluke you're seeing but you still won't get it until Tuesday.

Listen to what Mike said.
You could get a tracking number even before the package reached fedex.
What happened was that newegg paid for the shipping label and set up the shipment online on sunday. This would give you a tracking number. The package was picked up by fedex on monday, since they're not open on sundays. You got the package the very next day on tuesday. I don't see anything wrong.

I clicked on this thinking someone would be complaining about weekend shipping again and I was not disappointed.

You answered your own quesstion. Overnight refers to business days. Sat/Sun are not business days. Monday is the first Biz day from you order so Tues is the first Biz day to expect the shipment.

Now, let's discuss what is so important about this shipment that you can't wait another day... Or are you a victim of the NOW NOW NOW NOW curse that is spreading across this country?

if you order something on the weekend and pay for "next day", that is tuesday
they pack it/send it monday, you get it tuesday

if that isn't good enough, go to a B&M store

Even if they could have gotten it to you by Monday, they shouldn't because it creates an expectation. You expect to receive the package Tuesday, they delivered it to you then, expectation met. Companies pay a whole lot more than you did to get things shipped in faster time periods.

I work retail phone service for a major e-tailer, and i truly despise people like you.
Tuesday delivery is exactly what you paid for, Sunday does not exist as far as fed ex is concerned. You ordered on a weekend overnight or 1-day is Tuesday's delivery. thats it, end of story.

Now quit being an arrogant, self righteous punk and deal with the fact that you are getting EXACTLY the service you paid for, nothing more, nothing less

What is that God awful whining noise? It sure is loud.

Next day is always business day start to finish, unless, and only unless, otherwise specified. So Monday to Tuesday is next day. If fedEX picked up early, that in no way obligates them to get it to you same day for the same price. It is doubtful though, as others have pointed out, that is was pickup up on Sunday.

Oh really? "I (obviously) expected them Tuesday"

This is nearly as bad as the guy who thought that the day the package is picked up counts as a day, thus 2nd day would get there the next day, next day would get there the same day, and same day would get there before you shipped it.

Two things:

1) Fedex delivers sat and sun. I have gotten plenty of packages delivered/calltagged on both days for work and once or twice for personal packages. The people that "make it clear it's a mon-fri business" are newegg people. If you read the website it clearly states newegg will not have packages delivered sat or sunday (delivered, but they do ship out because they have in the past). Why? Because it's very expensive. However, when my medicine was accidentally delivered to my house instead of school my parents got it delivered to me by 10am sunday (cost over $100).

2) Perhaps it's the slew of crappy customer service I have gotten this summer (the BBB is still trying to get close to $10,000 returned to me from orders that got triple charged AFTER I had canceled them with Sony, you can read about it on notebookreview.com if you care) but to call it shipped when it's in the warehouse irritates me. Why? Because it's their way of making your order harder to cancel. Within 2hrs of my order it was classified as shipped when it clearly wasn't, and had their been a problem newegg would have said "sorry it's on a truck to you we can't fix it" blah blah (like sony did 30min after I placed my order even though the system was on backorder). Anyways the fedex tracking page is kinda funny to look at this morning: package scanned, package left originating destination, package information sent to fedex.......

Now, I don't expect anything less than the best reaming on the ATOT forums because that's all you guys do anymore I just had to type it out somewhere.

/flame on!

The best part of ATOT is the quote tags only work on half of any statement. I expected it on tuesday because I didn't expect them to pick up on sunday, get it? But I expected them to deliver it on the day after they picked it up......see how it works here?

Like I said in my previous post, I expected nothing less than a bunch of repressed nerds taking it all out on me (I mean ATOT has to have one thread at all times where the person gets told how dumb they are by everyone that posts, might as well be it) but it was in no way a giant rant, I never said I'm calling/mailing in a complaint. In fact, I stated I understood but I thought it was tacky that they can pick up sunday and say "It doesn't count cause it's not monday!!". I work in a private uniform store over the summer, granted we sell to people like John Smoltz and congressmen but we are REALLY careful about how we handle things because even the vaguest hint of improper handling of their kids clothes and we get taken to the house.

I've got to say that you obviously don't get just what the hell you're talking about.

I ship out a lot of packages (albeit via USPS... which is cheap and whatnot.) I ship out notices about an item being shipped on the weekends for packages that will leave on Monday. Why? Because if the package is ready to go and it's going to be shipped Monday, why should I waste time on Monday sending out order notifications when everything is set and the packages will go out Monday? Also, Newegg goes through thousands of orders every day... the people there already work 3 times as hard on a Monday the way it is but then to throw in the nonsense of having to wait until "Monday" to send out the shipping notification is just an absolute idiotic notion.

Newegg created the shipping label, received the tracking number, and probably loaded the package on to a truck or semi trailer. FedEx probably does pick up packages and bring them to a processing plant on Sunday nights from larger businesses like newegg so that the plant doesn't get bogged down come Monday when they already have a rediculous load of packages from the weekend to process and take care of.

So if the FedEx guy stopped at Newegg and started loading up and noticed your next day package and said "Oh, sorry I can't pick this up yet, I'll be back tomorrow for it" you would be fine. Right?
