FEDEX Opening packages with high insured value ???

BabaBooey

Lifer
Went to fedex to ship off a wii and extras for a friend and I claimed the $500 ins and she says I will have to open it to see if you packed it right...😕

Of course I said well I want it done in front of me then and she got a little pissy about it but screw that you want to open my package you will do it in front of me.

Anyone else experience this yet at any of the shippers ?

I've insured FedEx packages for more than $5000 and they've never asked to check the packaging...then again they're picking it up from the office.

It is part of the terms you agree to when shipping it. UPS is the same way. They have the right to open and inspect any package that goes through their system.

Back in the day my dad's boss shipped 10k in cash via fedex from NY to WI. Package arrived empty heh.

Now we just drive there to get it, but the moral of the story is fedex cannot be trusted with anything. 🙂

They prolly opened it just to check to see if it was worth stealing...

they are trying to see if it's anything worth stealing

Fixed, don't expect your recipient to get his/her Wii 😛

"WTF? Why did you ship me a smashed Playstation?"
"I shipped you a Wii"
"I got a smashed playstation, the laser head is even missing."

I use my messenger gnome. He's the expedia gnome's cousin, so it isn't that expensive.

Because the DHL person can't leave packages at my apartment's office nor will they let me pick them up from thier station that is half a mile away.

DHL said that they had delivered my package to my front door at 2:26PM yesterday. Package wasn't there. I called DHL and said WTF? Package showed up on my door at around 4:00PM. Never rang the doorbell either.

Other than that, they've been very fast ad reliable for me with over a thousand successful shipments and only two screw ups in three years. Rates are cheap too.

The same thing happened when I shipped a computer about 4-6 weeks ago via FedEx. They asked if that was ok and I said sure, as long as you are repackaging it (it was packaged oddly enough that you had to redo it from scratch to get everything back together).

I've never had them do this at the FedEx place but I have at the FedEx Kinko's when I was shipping a laptop. He said they have to check it otherwise they won't insure it. Since I packaged that so airtight he kinda pushed on the sides and asked what I had all done and said that would be good enough.

I don't think its really an issue, unless they refuse to do it in front of you. I would either say no way and if they are adamant I would ask for the package back and take it to a different facility.

I think they look at what you said the item is and if its in the original packaging. If its not then they'll probably want to check it.

I shipped a laptop almost a year ago and insured it for $1400 and they told me they couldn't do that unless it was packed in one of their laptop boxes or in the original Dell packaging. The box I was shipping it in was the original Dell box with "DELL" stamped all over it 😕 I had to point out that yes that is the original Dell packaging and he said "oh ok" and was fine with it.

But that was almost a year ago so maybe something has changed?

It's true and the person told me that it's policy to make sure you're not shipping a broken thing and then cashing in on fraud.

They can open my packages all day long, that will just give me more ammo should I need to file a claim if they screw it up.
