I ordered something from Newegg.com on Monday. It shipped out on Tuesday. Today, it says:

Nov 17, 2004 9:59 am

Package status - LOS ANGELES CA - Package in FedEx location - 9:25 am

Package status - LOS ANGELES CA - Package not due for delivery - 8:10 am

The Estimated delivery date is the 19th. I live 5 miles away from newegg and 2 miles from the Fedex LA Hub.

Meaninglessly/needlessly necroed. -DrPizza

If they didn't a lot of people would never use next-day and 2-day.

Yup, it's happened to me before. However, if you have a very motivated driver in your area, chances are you'll get the package earlier than the expected delivery date. However, if you have a slacker of a driver, fugettaboutit. ;)

yep ... really sucks. UPS doesnt hold any of my packages. I've actually had stuff delivered a couple of days ahead of schedule.

DHL is horrible. They love delivering stuff around 5pm when my work place is deserted. I told them the school closes @ 4 and they still show up after 4.

I can drive over there I guess but it's a bit out of my way. Do they allow will call or whatever?

Way I see it, if you can pick it up, do it. Otherwise, stop whining. ;)

They usually will not let you pick up the package until at least one delivery attempt has been made.

My answer may not be likeable, but it is the fact:

- Each shipment has quoted delivery time.
- Customer paid and chose desired shipment method (by paying less for ground or paid higher for air/2nd day etc.). So all packages are prioritized.
- FedEx does not have to pay for shipments that they hold in their locations. You can argue that FedEx has to pay for carrying costs (warehouse rent/cooling/material handling etc., but most of times logistics companies use cross-docking to minimize handling)
- Finally FedEx truck when leaves each morning for delivery has limited capacity and then it has constraint of not visiting FedEx DC (distribution center) say no more than 1 time, so now space in truck each morning has prime importance. (EDIT: If you are engineering student, google on TRAVELING SALESMAN PROBLEM)
- So FedEx chooses to hold your shipment over leaving other customer dissatisfied.

Hope this helps.

I've never had FedEx do this to me.

I've ordered stuff from Newegg and other semi-local places and just got the cheapest shipping and they deliver it within a day or so.

Ahh ok, well, I've never had my package held at FedEx. But I did have FedEx lose a package.

fedex changes a lot of their delivery policies during the busy holiday season.

Same here. All of my Newegg packages come in 1-2 days. Despite the Super Saver shipping.

Ever think it might just be the asshats running your local FedEx station and not the company itself? That's who i'd look to first.

Never had that happen to me. My package is either delivered on the ETA or a day early.

A couple times I've had the Fedex guy show up to my door 2 days before the package was expected to be there....and it was on a Saturday. Asked the Fedex guy WTF he was doing and he said they were trying to clear their warehouse out. And this was in the middle of the summer

When you consider that they'll deliver a package to your building, even your own office, while your package sits on their truck, you realize that your first two points are the main reasons. Add to that the fact that UPS delivers as early as possible.

I don't blame FedEx though, it's a business decision - if people want overnight or two day delivery, they can pay for it.

The Estimated delivery date is the 19th. I live 5 miles away from newegg and 2 miles from the Fedex LA Hub.

How is that possible when the LA Fedex hub is like 40 miles from newegg?

Well I live 10 miles from newegg and 5 miles from the Fullerton fedex sort facility(which is where newegg drops their packages off to). They end up taking it to the LA hub, then back to the fullerton facility, then ship it to me the next day.
4/5 times when I order from newegg, I get it the next day. Once in a while, fedex will pull that package not due for delivery crap on me.

Also newegg has no will call at all, they won't even let employees pick up packages. My neighbor used to work there. You can call fedex to arrange for a pickup though.
