I guess God sent them a message. LOL (but at least he also sent a Venezuelan fishing vessel)

An Arizona family fed up with abortion, homosexuality, taxes and the “state-controlled church” will fly back home Sunday after being lost at sea for months.

Hannah Gastonguay told the Associated Press she and her husband “decided to take a leap of faith and see where God led us.” The family, which included two small children, abandoned the United States and set sail for the island nation of Kiribati in May. They ended up lost in the Pacific Ocean for 91 days.

During the voyage, their boat was damaged by “squall after, squall, after squall.” The damage forced them to head towards the nearer Marquesas Islands, but they made little progress.

A Canadian cargo ship spotted them and offered them some supplies. But the large ship bumped into the small boat, resulting in even more damage.

With their supplies running low, they were eventually picked up by a Venezuelan fishing vessel that spotted them.

“The captain said, ‘Do you know where you’re at? You’re in the middle of nowhere,’” Gastonguay told the Associated Press.

After being transferred to a Japanese cargo ship, the family ended up in Chile. U.S. Embassy officials arranged for them to be flown home.

I wonder how this affected their faith. On that basis, I see few positive conclusions that can be drawn from this.

if they can survive that with 2 small children, they can survive anything.

Rescued: Hannah Gastonguay, her baby Rahab, husband Sean and the couple's 3-year-old daughter Ardith, were lost at sea for nearly three months

Darwin almost got to claim his prize.

funny how they aren't running to the church to pray for help from god instead of the embassy of the country they feel too good for.

Hey neat, I learned of a new island chain nation called Kiribati. And look, Wiki tells me I was born a little bit before their constitution was promulgated.

And look, another new word learned.

Fun story, And I learned 2 new things.

I wonder how much their little misadventure cost those involved, since they're complaining about having to pay taxes to help subsidize abortions and what not.

They might look into what it means being gay and unable to marry in the US and having to pay into a system they get very little out of before they complain about getting shafted.

You're free to ask God anything, but keep in mind he sometimes says "no".

The story would have been better if they ended up at Kiribati, and found the entire populace to be homosexual abortion doctors.

Surprised no mention of child services getting involved.

I dont get this part.

So a Canadian cargo ship comes along and says oh hey lets offer some help to these folks they seem to be in trouble. But they bump into their boat causing damage .... then they high-tail it out of there? Or is it implied that the family refused their help and decided to stay floating at sea longer until the Venezuelans came along?

That part sounded like a hit-n-run at sea

I guess God led them to the middle of nowhere... either that or stupidity. Too close to call really.

I'm curious what kind of sailboat this was and how big.

I think we need a new postpartum category for the Darwin awards.

I don't know why Darwin wouldn't apply. Survival of the fittest, even if it takes a little while. Some species reproduce, but aren't fit for long term survival.

As the Pastor at my church says what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Also God never gives you more than you can handle. They survived, so if their faith has wavered from this, then they didn't have very much to begin with. They were saved in a situation that 99% of people in would have died, and they managed to survive a stupidly long time until they were found. This will make their faith jump x1000.

Actually, I bet this ordeal further solidified their faith.

Really brutal ordeal with little chance of survival resulting in a "miraculous" rare rescue? Yeah, I bet they're thinking that God did it, especially if they were praying for someone to find them.

Sometimes I have the misfortune of reading religious comments on current events. If a new cure for something is discovered by Dr. XYZ, you've got comments like "PRAISE THE LORD FOR GIVING US A CURE!" completely ignoring that all that was due to the hard work and accomplishment of the doctor.

You're probably right. The way /I'd/ read it is I asked god to take me to the promised land, and he got my ass lost, and sent me back to where I started from, which was the cause of my problems in the first place. If I wanted to go a little deeper, I might surmise that god loves queers and abortions.

+1 for having principles.

-1 for misguided principles.

People think that evil is done by Bond villains. But more commonly evil is done by misguided 'principles'. Note how they harm gay people in the name of principles.
