I installed the game yesterday and updated it as well as my 6800gt driver. What I don't understand is that it only give me the option to go up to 1024x768 resolution. I asked them about it over live chat and the guy seemed to be avoiding the point that they only support low resolutions. He gave me a workaround which I haven't tried yet to force higher resolutions. My question is why in the hell would a game maker this day in age only have a game go up to 1024x768. IIRC Quake 3 that is like 3-4 yrs old had support for 1600x1200. All I want is to run it at 1280 x ? so I can play at my 19" native resolution and the guy acts like I want to perform brain surgery. Here's the chat we had.

{Zane} Hi I just installed FEAR today and have a 6800gt with updated drivers but can't get it set to 1280 resolution, there's no option for it, it just goes up to 1024.
{Zane} I have a 19" LCD adn would like to use the native resolution with is 1280. I also updated FEAR to 1.02
{vivendi.Arun} Thank you for the information.
{Zane} I just has options for 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768. Shouldn't it go a lot higher than this?
{vivendi.Arun} I understand that you would like to set the game for 1280x720 resolution. Is that correct?
{Zane} 1280x1024 is what I want. Its the 19" LCD native resolution.
{vivendi.Arun} Ok.
{Zane} If you go under that is has to scale the image or something which reduces quality on a LCD.
{vivendi.Arun} Zane, by default the game is set to support 4:3 resolutions and it is recommended to play the game in 4:3 resolutions. However, the game can be forced to start in a different resolution.
{Zane} 4:3 is fine.
{Zane} I just need it to be 1280 x something.
{Zane} Are you telling me the game is suppose to only be able to go to 1024x768 out of the box. Most games have support up to 1600x1200.
{vivendi.Arun} Follow the steps below to force a resolution:
1) Locate the file Settings.cfg at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\<Shared>Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR
2) Right click settings.cfg file, select Open With and click Choose Program.
3) In the Open With window select Notepad and click Ok.
4) Content of the settings.cfg file would be similar to the following:
"GammaB" "1.622837"
"GammaG" "1.622837"
"Renderer" "NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT"
"GammaR" "1.622837"
"BitDepth" "32"
"HardwareCursor" "1.000000"
"ScreenWidth" "800"
"VSyncOnFlip" "0.000000"
"DeviceName" "\\.\DISPLAY1"
"ScreenHeight" "600"
5) Replace the current width (?800?) by desired width, for example: ?1280?.
6) Replace the current height (?600?) by desired height, for example: ?720? or ?800?.
Note: 1280x720 is 16:9 ratio and 1280x800 is 16:10 ratio.
7) Click File, click Save and close the file.
8) To check if the screen resolution has changed in the game, start the game, click Options on main menu of the game and click Advanced Video Card Options.
9) Click Graphics and check if Screen Resolution has changed according to the settings.cfg file.
Note: If the game does not start after editing the settings.cfg file, follow the steps below to restore the default settings.
1) Click Start, click All Programs, click Sierra, click FEAR and click F.E.A.R. Configuration Utility.
2) Click Options tab on F.E.A.R. Advanced Config App. window, check Restore defaults, click Save and close the window.
{Zane} I'll try that out.
{vivendi.Arun} Sure, is there anything else, I can assist you today?
{Zane} Thats it. I still don't understand why the game only supports up to 1024x768 out of the box. Games 3 years old have support up to 1600x1200. Why did they leave this out. Is it a engine capability problem?
{vivendi.Arun} Zane, I understand your stance.
However, as I mentioned you previously by default the game is set to support 4:3 resolutions and it is recommended to play the game in 4:3 resolutions.
{vivendi.Arun} Zane, it was pleasure chatting with you today.
Thank you for contacting Vivendi Universal Games chat support. Have a great day and take care.
