I think they should go even more extreme. I've yet to watch one(granted I watch very few) where all the contestants don't at least attempt to eat whatever is offered. I thought the object to to eliminate the wusses and have the best two or three battle at the end. If no one's scared to eat your bugs or your rotten lemons, you gotta step it up a notch till you find something that truly repulses people.
Although that one where they had to fish something out of the tub of cow blood with their mouths was pretty gross, but $500K is riding on it, you gotta take a shot.

Have them start eating parts of their own body (fingers, toes, ears) and see who are the toughies 😛
 
probably just autoclaved to kill bacteria and what not... meaning the food is sterile, they will most likely sere ti cold to give the impression that it wasnt cooked.
 
I saw a special before about the food they make, its all safe and made to just gross you out into thinking what you're eating is really bad for you but in fact none of it would harm you.

Its all about the mental effect.
