Fear Factor and drinking bile...

I saw it last night where the contestants had to eat live slugs and drink bile. Isn't drinking bile dangerous? It's kind of like drinking sh!t isn't it? Does Fear Factor make sure the gross food the contestants eat is safe?

They are forcing contestents to eat food that no culture eats -- unlike Survivor which usually forces contestents to eat food that the natives actually eat.

I don't think they could do foods that other cultures eat without it looking like they are somehow slamming or making fun of that culture.

Besides, it's fun watching them degrade themselves for 50K or whatever it is. 😀

edit: When I say foods that other cultures eat, I meant that they wouldn't say something like "the natives of such and such a land eat these daily and now you will too" or whatever.

Untrue.

Almost everything they eat is eaten in some other country. I don't know about bile.

And no, eating bile is not like eating sh!t..

Bile is an enzyme that helps digests fats. It is released into your intestinal tract by your gall bladder when it is needed.

It isn't going to hurt anything, except maybe your senses. Although I'm not sure how much use cow or pig bile or whatever they use would be to us as far as digestion goes.

It is my understanding that bile is produced by your liver, delivered to the stomach, and is fairly acidic (essentially your stomach acid). Heartburn, for example, is caused by bile contacting the esophagus. If you have ever been really sick and have thrown up bile, you know it makes your throat burn like crazy. It is acidic and IMO, should NEVER purposely come in contact with your esophagus. Drinking it doesn't sound too bright and wouldn't be pleasant. Prolonged contact of bile with the esophagus can actually erode the esophagus (common occurance in bulemics) and cause permanent damage. Overly acidic bile can cause stomach ulcers.

That show is gayer than a baseball bat up my ass. Nothing on it is scary except for eating disgusting things. And that's not scary, but just uncomfortable.

With exception to a few things like swimming with gators or spiders all over me I can't think of anything on that show I'd be scared to do.

Everything eaten on Fear Factor is cleared by California Health Inspectors for safety, as well as several people on the Fear Factor staff try it out.

No, that is not bile. That is stomach acid.

Bile IS produced by your liver, and stored by your gallbladder, but it is never in your stomach. As I said, when it is needed (ie: you eat a fatty food), your gallbladder contracts and floods your small(?) intestines with bile to help in digestion.

So what is contained in stomach acids?

Other digestive enzymes and substances.

Bile is an intestinal thing.

By the way, bile IS consumed in some cultures. My great grandparents (Chinese) took bile for medicinal purposes. I do find it disgusting but then again it's all perspective.

that show is so f***ing sick - i wish people would stop watching it so it would go away. just seeing one of the ads is distrubing. they need to rename it gross-out factor.

Hydrogene - Chloride (HCl) ?

Would southerners be offended if contestants on Fear Factor were forced to eat Krystal burgers?

IIRC, bile stops the stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) corroding the top of your intestine by coating the intestine, and it also emulsifies the fats that come from whatever food you eat.

I'm guessing it could be used to combat heatburn, if anything. (the pH of it is higher than that of HCl)
