Have you tried bypassing the launcher and running FEARXP.EXE directly? I read on the official forum there was a bug setting the URL and that would cause it to fail.

Also my friend had a problem starting the game that didn't get fixed til he updated his sound drivers.

it is right there in the FEAR directory as FEARXP ... clicking it still leads to a "cant find" message. ... same problem before the fresh install as after....
... and several reinstall of the game ... it is in the right directory.

latest everything ... clean install of Win2K this weekend ... 100% updated ... Audigy drivers updated, naturally

it'll be time to visit the help forums there or call tech support.

OK, i AM having problems with launching FEAR XP

... clean install of OS ... everything updated &c

many installs and reinstalls of the X-pack ... even got a 2nd copy to make sure the first install disks weren't bad

looking deeper into this i get this engine error message within FEAR Directory:

now the orignal version of FEAR [updated to 1.07 by the Xpack] plays perfectly

i guess i will try reinstalling it and then the xpack ... again

Dude, I have that error log and everything is running fine for me. I don't think that is an error log you are looking at though. It looks to be a list of error messages the program can kick out if it runs into a particular problem. Are you running any anti-virus or virtual (CD/DVD) drive software?

antivir is stopped

install of FEAR went perfectly and it plays very well for my system.

otoh,when i try to launch FEAR XP, i get

Cannot find the file <'INVALID STRING'> (or one of its components) ...
<INVALID STRING> (0x2)

i have tried un and reinstalling the Xpack several times ... tomorrow am i will try unistalling FEAR, the XP and then trying again.

any more suggestions?

OK ... got up early Sun AM to try again

Uninstalled both FEAR and its X-Pack

Reinstalled FEAR, Installed the X-Pack [updated to 1.07] ... nothing running in the background

same crap ... different day

reading the Launcher in Notepad, i get this:

that's when i try to launch from the Launcher within the FEAR XP folder or from the desktop shortcut ... it attempts to access a "FEAR Launcher" Website and then aborts with the above message.

... first game ever that failed to launch
[it's a clean OS install from last Monday ... same thing happened on the old install ... OTOH, DMMM and NWN2 installed and patched flawlessly [except for known performance issues with NWN2]

BTW, FEAR runs better than it ever did - maybe it's the 1.07 patch ... 10x7 with everything maxed [except SS], 2xAA/8xAF with only 3% of the test just below 25 FPS ... most everything else well over 40 fps.

not that i care to replay it

EDIT: getting somewhere ...
when i go to the FEAR X-pack configuration utility it is BLANK and when i try to launch from there i get a message "not enough resources"

otoh, when i do the SAME thing in FEAR, the configuration utility works fine

There's 1.08 patch out for FEAR ,try the full 1.08 patch version (299mb) that will upgrade any previous version to 1.08 version.

Also 1.08 smaller version patch link only 45mb

FWIW, I installed FEAR first, upgraded to 1.08, then installed Extraction Point. Everything except HW accelerated audio works fine (apparently that is never going to work with the X-fi Fata1lty, it has been broken for awhile).

As far as the game itself goes, it is pretty much "been there, done that." If you are just looking for an extension of the original game play you will probably be happy. I find it an okay way to kill some time, maybe slightly on the boring side. I am glad I only payed $17.99 for it. I haven't finished it yet though, maybe it will get a little better....or worse?

SOLVED

i found the problem ... a simple and rather strange one and likely related to SecurRom ...

USUALLY, i use both my DVD drives to install games when they are on multiple cds to "save time" - an older Toshiba DVD-ROM and a newer DVD DL R/RW burner

after unnstalling JUST the Xpack and defragging for the nth time, THIS time i used ONLY the newer drive


flawless install and launch ... so far no error messages



who'd-a-thought??!




edit: yeah, it is more-of-the-same ... that is exactly what i want ... in-between RPGs

and i noticed it is a bit more demanding than the original ... i'm down from 2xAA/8xAF to 0AA/4xAF and textures are down from Hi to Med [everything else 'on' and 'hi' at 10x7]

i am going to GUESS and say i do NOT need the v1.08 patch if i am not playing either FEAR or FEAR MP

... and i see there is no patch for the x-pack [yet]

Good that you solved your problem, I just read this thread for the first time and was going to add in a potential fix for anyone else who may be having problems getting FEAR XP to launch (as I did), and it affected a number of other programs for me as well. Security update kb917422 really screwed up a number of things and the only way I could get FEAR XP to launch was to install the MS hotfix listed here.

Another little issue I've ran across that may help some is that after you play FEAR XP, quit and decide to play again sometimes it may not relaunch. Open up task manager and kill launcher.exe, it doesn't seem to close out properly all the time.
