I don't think there is enough information, in order to find anything, debris would have to be removed. What would depend is if they sifted thought the debris they took away, or just loaded in dump trucks without searching.

But, but, but . . . he's America's mayor. FDNY is just jealous that Giuliani doesn't love them as much as NYPD. Maybe they should drive 41 trucks into a Bronx kid . . . then Giuliani could rush to their defense.

it sounds like they are mad because he made a tough choice to get the city moving again.

I think it was the right decision. The risks involved in looking for remains and the needs of the city as a whole outweigh the need to find remains. Now if he did this like a few weeks later I could see where they would be upset, but he waited nearly 2 months.

Sorry, but you cannot leave that much material, some of it hazardous, just laying there. Life isn't fair.

There are health and safety concerns when you alllow rubble, debris, and toxic chemicals to sit in a city. Accelerating the cleanup process after nearly 2 months of looking isnt a bad thing. I guess he cant please everybody.

Now all the other candidates are going to fall all over themselves to proclaim how much they love and support firefighters.

Their forum is going to be a nauseating thankathon.

From the article:

Giuliani modified his policy after the protest because public opinion was so strongly with our members. Ultimately, he was forced to put the fire fighters back on the pile. Our protests were later proven justified as more bodies were ultimately recovered and those families given a chance for some closure and a decent burial.

Typical politician.

With that much wreckage and debris, I don't see how Giuliani could have done otherwise. It's not as if he came to the decision without consulting a lot of people.

I can understand why the families and firefighters wouldn't like it, though.

Big G was disconnected with the people of new york during 9/11. The general public held much different political views than he did about what to do about the attack etc.

But I was New York Firefighter. How many candidates can say that?

I think the real reason they're mad at him is because the city chose to close down certain firehouses not long after 9/11. I remember a big uproar about it.

Sounds like the firefighter union is doing a hatchet job on a Republican candidate who is growing in popularity.

Translation...the mayor makes a tough call to get the city moving beyond a terrible tragedy, and the firefighter union decides to make a politically convenient statement a few years later to undermine his Presidential campaign.

I think most of you folks are missing the point. Like most Republicans, Giuliani is going to great lengths to tell us how much he loves firefighters, and police officers, and the military, and all the other groups a true American patriot is supposed to love. And like most Republicans, he's obviously full of crap...his "support the troops/police/firefighters" is all about political gain. Nobody is saying that he didn't have a good reason for doing what he did, but someone who REALLY believes what Giuliani would like us to think he believes would have found another way.

He'd come to their aid if they sprayed black people with hoses like in the olden golden days.

If it's between Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton for President in 2008, I'll vote for Rudy in a heart beat. I have nothing against Unions, but the majority of Unions only point fingers and never try to come up with real working solutions. Giuliani is a convenient target, so FDNY decided to get as much publicity as they can by pointing a finger at Rudy Giuliani.

You post so much yet know so little. The Firefighters Unions are typically the only unions who will back Republicans, heck the New York Firefighters Union endorsed Bush in '04.

I thought that they went through all the debris when it got to the landfill?

I wonder how much of this is a result of the bitterness they hold against Rudy for his cost cutting efforts.

Rudy is a former Federal DA who worked with the police department to turn NY around and turn it into the safest large city in the country.
And he did all this while secretly hating the police right?

I didn't say he hates the police, I said he places political expediency above any pro-police/firefighter/military feelings. When the two interests line up, like with his effort to clean up NYC, it's might LOOK like he's on their side, but when it comes down to their interests against other interests, it's a whole different story.

It's a recurring theme with Republicans. They "support the troops" when it's a good argument in favor of their war policies, but that support seems to evaporate when it comes to funding veteran's hospitals, or benefits, or anything that actually supports them.
