When formatting a hd, do you always have to fdisk? Or can I just format:c/u
and then install operating system?

You can just format, but I recommend doing the fdisk. I now always use fdisk so that I have the options of repartioning my drive at the time of format/fdisk.
 
Well, this is a friends machine and it is only a 1.6g drive, so I am not interested in partitioning.
