I am well aware the latter is a licensed derivative of sony's trinitron and both are AG tubes. people on AT forums apeear to hail the Mitsu/NEC monitors to be the king of the hill. while i have seen a couple of them at the stores, i been using FD trinitrons for about 4 years now. Is the difference readily noticeable? better yet, does the difference stem from the inherent characteristics of the tubes or the rest of the monitor (all that stuff goes on the PCB)?

the NEC was going to be my new monitor in a next couple of days, till i saw this.

another one

yet another

actually they have some NF Diamondtrons as well, does it sport the same tube as the famous NEC 2147s?

Diamondtron.....best looking monitor. I have taken my Diamondtron to LAN parties against many Trinitrons and everybody comments on the greatness of the DT.

My previous monitor was a Sony CPD-G400 and it was. It served me well for nearly 4 years but died a short while back. To be honest it is still sitting on my computer room floor - can't bring myself to throw it out. I don't know if 4 years of use is good for a Trinitron but considering it was quite expensive when I purchased it I think a 1 year warranty is pretty weak. My friend had a 17" Sony Trinitron die only a couple months out of warranty. If you go Sony I'd suggest getting an extended warranty just in case.

I've got a Compaq P1220 now and it's a Diamondtron NF. Did a quick search but couldn't find up which model it is by Mitsubishi though. Either way, I think it's an absolutely amazing monitor. IMO it's every bit as good as my old Sony. My only complaint about it is when it warms up from being powered off or power saving it takes a minute or so to "settle in". Oh, it's got a 3 year warranty BTW. :)

With the Trinitron, you will notice 2 horizontal lines on your screen. I had one for a short time before it started freaking out (colors everywhere - thought it was vid card but i won't go into that). If the diamondtron really is better than the trinitron, then wow! buy that baby up. i know while it worked, i loved my trinitron, it was a lot easyer on the eyes than a veiwsonic flat screen.

Maximum PC consistently hails the Sony F500 (I believe that's the model number) as the best CRT, primarily because of it having the lowest dot pitch in the industry. So Sony might win for having that one product. I had a NF Diamondtron tube in my Nokia 445Pro and it was fine. I personally think that overall, the Trinitron and Diamondtron are roughly equal. But I have heard that Sony is pulling out of the CRT business, so it may become a one horse game.

I had a Sony G400(Trinitron) and I currently have a Mitsubishi 930SB(Diamondtron) and they both have there strengths. The Sony had way better text quality than my Mitsu does, but the colors are quite a bit better on the Mitsu.

LG is REALLY flat. but the general consensus is they are great for about a year and rapidly lose their brightness. the relatively newer zenith tech may need some more time to mature...

I had a Sony GDM-F500, very expensive and went bad after only 5 years of use....very dissappointed. I am now using a Mitsubishi DP2070. The Sony had excellent resolution (doesn't matter if it won't last), but the Mitsu was less than 1/2 the price and is pretty darn good too. Never again will I make that Sony overpriced mistake....

I don't now how your going to find a trinitron unless you buy a Sony Artisan for $2000. They cost to much to make, ship and market is'nt there for the best when LCD can be had cheaper.

So to me the Olny viable choice is diamondtron. I like the ones by Veiwsonic because of most attractive besel.

Heavy glassed, expensive AG's are going the way of the dodo bird expect for prefessional monitors costing 1000's. So You better hurry and get a diamondtron, they'll be gone too by next year.

EDIT I found FD for you CTX PR1400F with USB, BNC, 21" for around $500. Superior in every way to Diamondtron this monitor was $1000 when first came out.
