I laughed then realized the extent of what could've happened to the car. Hopefully the wheel company will pay for it.

Kind of odd for him to lose all 4 at once. SOMEONE fcked up pretty badly. You'd think he could tell if he had the wrong thread pattern/pitch when he put the lug nuts on the studs...doesn't take a rocket scientist to feel the extra resistance.

The half-trained monkeys who work at tire shops usually just grab the impact wrench and gun it when they put on tires, instead of starting them by hand and finishing them with a torque wrench like you're supposed to. I can easily see how they could make that mistake.

But I don't see how you have to be "far more mechanically inclined" than Average Joe Racer to recognize incorrect threadings when you feel them.

wait, so was the lug 1) too large for the stud? or 2) vice versa?

in case 1) even with an impact wrench the lug will come right off.
so is case 2) applied to this incident?

I can only guess it was just large enough.. and then got cross threaded somehow and he thought it was snug?

I think the lug nuts were 1 mm too big. When he went to thread them on, they would have a bit of a wobble but there wouldn't be any extra resistance. If he started them a turn or two by hand and then ran them on with a cordless impact on low (as is very typical nowadays), he would have missed the wobble. There would also be enough thread contact to properly torque them. It wasn't until the wheels put some real load on the lug nuts that they stripped and vacated the premises...
