Fcp x

I understand why people are angsty since it's not backwards compatible. I don't get the rest of the complaining though.

OMF output is the only way to get your audio to a audio post production facility.

xml and edl allow you to keep track and output change lists for other programs.

all gone. No one in their right mind would use this tool in a professional environment.

Very true.

And OMF/edl/xml support is just part of it.

When I first saw the features that were missing, I thought it must be a mistake, because my first thought was, "If this is true, then there's no way in hell that half the productions in Hollywood could even use this thing. It'd be like trying to do pro editing with iMovie"

And as it turns out, that DOES seem to be the case, thus far.

Hopefully they'll fix most of the mess. But the suck thing is, for studios gearing up new editing seats right now, there's no option other than going with Premiere or Avid- yanking FCP7 was just stupid on Apple's part. If enough people switch before Apple can get X up to speed, it'll be like an industry wide tidal wave.

yeah I just received this email from one of my clients who was asking me about the omf 24 bug (instead of showing 23.98 the omf output shows 24 even though the audio is 23.98 timelined)

"Thanks, Jeff. I knew it was something weird/simple like that.

Don't get me started on FCPX. I'm either going to hold on to FCP7 until they pry it from my cold, dead hands, or mutiny. Nice when you invest literally ten years of your life/career into software and they abandon you so they can sell software to teenagers making videos for YouTube.

Like I said, don't get me started."

I feel bad for him. I couldn't imagine that happening to me. However avid is offering a $1000 crossgrade right now for fcp7 users.

JStorm, so what IS the cause of the omf 24 bug?

At my job I work with 23.98 timing exclusively, and am constantly shuffling OMFs back and forth with the AVID dept. and never run into that issue. But if it ever does show up, it would be nice to know what's up.

for some reason fcp outputs 23.98 omfs on a true 24 timeline, however the audio has not been pulled up. Its dumb and you need to realign all the audio via 2pops.

Apple fucked up by making it too much like iMovie. iMovie sucks balls and always has. Apple is trying to attract the consumer crowed but has alienated their professional users.

Oh well, I've still got Express 4 and Premiere Pro CS4 on my Macbook.

To paraphrase TheFlyingPig:

"Never buy first-generation Apple products. Everyone knows this"

:awe:

problem is you can buy fcp 7 anymore. Say you are a editorial house and are ready to expand...

I think the new FCP-X is *going* to be awesome. I think they released a half-baked product driven by various constraints (deadline, lack of manpower due to iOS, etc.). And then shot themselves in the foot by pulling the FCS7 inventory 😀

I think Apple is going to see a huge surge in hacked copies of FCS7 when, as you said, editing houses expand and can't find it anymore (already OOS at most places!). I don't think this would be as big of a deal if FCS7 was still available for purchase. And Apple can't effectively make it available to download...it's too big! I image all of my software discs to DMG's on my file server and I believe my FCS7 suite weighed in at nearly 50 gigs for the full set. That'd take ages for most people to download and eat through a chunk of people's ISP's monthly bandwidth allowances too.

le sigh

Ah. I'd be lost without Automatic Duck -which by the way works for FCPX. It's just that now it's needed for export as well as import when FCP used to have native export.

It's funny that they priced FCPX at $300, but by the time everyone adds back in what was removed by Apple via 3rd party tools, it'll be the same $999, plus another $100 for Motion and Compressor.

The new Motion 5 is awesome by the way- it's sort of got lost in the shuffle. For $50 it's a steal.

Yeah I work on the sound side. I may pick up compressor if it makes dv/dvc pro files? Protools loves that format for some reason. I think its the combo of low res and no compression.
