The old TV spectrum is especially appealing because it can more easily penetrate buildings and other objects than microwaves, and even in open air I think it's supposed to have much better propagation qualities. This should mean lower deployment costs, as you don't need as many towers to cover an area as you would with technologies in the 2-5GHz range

Devices are able to go on sale as early as February 2009. I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see a lot of wireless broadband (at least in the large cities) showing up by the end of 2009. Will be interesting to see what Google intends to do with the spectrum. I'm sure they'd like to provide free internet, but I don't know how realistic that is.
