The FCC released the winners of the 700MHz auction today and Engadget has an article about it:

It looks like Verizon and AT&T took away the majority of the spectrum with other smaller companies picking up the smaller pieces.

The nice thing about the 700MHz spectrum is that it penetrates walls fairly well and it travels long distances well, which makes it great for cellular or long-range wireless broadband.

With this auction complete, and Verizon the winner, I'm hoping to see more things like Amazon's "Kindle". Wireless gizmos that are continuously connected to the internet and that charge per use rather than on an annual contract, or to not require an annual cell phone contract to use high-speed internet.

I'm not too sure about that, I mean as a corporation whose 1st interest in in shareholder value, changing the pricing plan drastically doesn't make too much sense. If the system aint broke and it's profitable, might as well use it.

It'd be nice to get better reception though.

The thing though is that this is going to take awhile before the infrastructure is up and running and able to be used by consumers. So while great, it'll take awhile to see how great it will be.
