The second generation of Shield was really the one I was excited about even before I knew that there would be a second generation. Mostly because I knew the first one would be basically spent drumming up interest from game designers for a real android based mobile console and bringing it to the attention of consumers. They've been making decent headway on that front, but I still don't know that it wouldn't be prudent to wait for a third generation before purchasing.

Yeah, it was rumoured a while ago so I expected it would show up sooner or later. It's supposed to have a 64-bit Tegra K1 powering the thing.

Realistically, the Shield will only ever be a niche product for two reasons. 1) Streaming is only compatible with Nvidia GPUs, eliminating about half of all PC gamers. 2) It has no exclusive games, which doesn't exactly make owning one worth while over an Android smartphone.

Not to mention a $30-40 accessory like this exist:

Honestly, if they're going to do anything to the SHIELD, I really hope they improve the d-pad. Apart from the thumbstick placement, the SHIELD looks a lot like the 360 controller... straight down to the terrible d-pad. I tried to play Lumines via PPSSPP, and while I'm pretty decent at the game on the PSP, I had so many unintended down presses (diagonals instead of left or right) that it was ridiculous.

The Shield 2 will likely be a huge improvement over the Shield.

But honestly, if Steam ever opens up at home streaming to Android devices, then get a Moga controller for your phone and you'll have the same functionality for cheaper.

Honestly, Steam streaming needs to shape up before it can match NVIDIA's efforts. What's kind of amusing is that I had a good, initial opinion of Steam's streaming, but the last two times I tried to use it (over about a month) have diminished my opinion. The second time I tried it, it just flat-out crashed, and the third time, it worked fine visually, but I had no sound. This was all using the exact same game (Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed).

Not just nvidia, but modern nvidia too. I have a 570 and can't stream.
