I agree that CALEA is likely the main reason, but a little dark money "gift donation" having been made also isn't out of the possibility for this administration.

Honestly, I was always curious as to whether the various open source router firmwares had complied with CALEA. I haven't ever read anything anywhere saying whether any of them did or not.
I think someone would have discovered something in OPNsense by now. I'd feel a little better installing pfsense as software on my computer than buying the hardware.(Netgate) If you're talking about things like OpenWrt, I guess it would depend how much you trust the hardware vendor.

It's almost certain that you'd find info that they did, if they did... open source and all, kind of hard to hide that. What would be their motivations for doing so anyway? Only a negative unless the man tries to bring them down, at which point they would likely just refuse compliance and state not for use in the US. I suppose it could be different if they are actually selling routers in the US with the firmware pre-installed but that's a pretty niche space considering the broader retail hardware market.

I simply plan to use TOR to download the updates for my router and then do a manual install. They have a global presence, and I feel certain they will continue to provide updates for everyone except the bastard stepchild of the planet.
