Keeping the commercial volume in line with the programs that it's put into. Uverse is notorious for playing that stupid game. Thumbs up here.

Eagerly awaiting misguided free market libertopian about gov't meddling in a regulated oligopoly.

Glad this finally went through. Watching TV at night once the kids go to sleep is a crap shoot. Never know when a commercial is going to come on and seem to be just blaring compared to the program. Wake the damn kids up all the time with that.

Yeah I read that yesterday and thought about starting a thread. Wondered if the issue was too trivial. I like it too. Bear in mind that it isn't really the FCC who deserves credit. The regulation was authorized by Congress in a bi-partisan bill last year.

I find it amusing the TV industry has refused to acknowledge that commercials run at higher volume than the programs they run with. It's so fricking obvious.

The DVR may be the single best invention of the past decade. I don't know what I'd do without my fast forward button.

I'm pretty sure the government either directly or indirectly made the commercials excessively loud. If they didn't, I also know that some people had devices that could reduce excessive loudness so the market already has worked around it. Put in earplugs when the volume gets too high. It's only during commercials, right?

Not enough people complained to their cable companies I guess. The first cable company that made commercials the same amount of db would get the most business if it bothered people that badly.

I don't want the FCC personally. All it does is control content.

This is good regulation, although kind of weird we were able to get something so trivial done while big shit gets pushed aside.

I'm pretty sure that makes perfect sense, it was trivial so it was unobjectionable.

Bad news-we still have to wait another 12 months before this change takes effect.

It's amazing how big corporations can drag things out-it seems like this change has been talked about as a done deal for a couple of years already.

More government crackdown on free speech.

edit: Oh, yeah, Ow! my Balls! is one of the best shows FOX has produced in years, this new regulation just clearly shows the MSM's democrat party liberal anti-Ow!, my Balls! bias.

I didn't say it doesn't make sense, I said it's weird. :) I do agree it makes perfect sense, commercial volume was probably interfering with their bitching about gays marrying.

The free market fixed this long ago. DVRs help you skip commercials. If you don't like that, go get your entertainment and news online with an ad-blocker installed.

But keep on cheering a dinosaur agency trying desparately to play catch up with a nimble market.

Yeah, the free market fixed it so well that people are still complaining. The issue is not being able to skip commercials, it's that when a show goes to commercial you might have what is a generally quiet program interrupted with a huge blast of noise. Sure you can skip it after that, but you've already been hit by some dumbass commercial's high decibel level.

Kudos on the FCC. I can't believe that the OP was right, people on this board really are that dumb.

True, but this is a decent piece of regulation. I've already skipped out on cable. I use Netflix and Hulu Plus on my Xbox 360. Costs about 20 dollars on top of my 60 dollar internet bill vs 130 or some crap they want for internet + basic cable(lacking channels with shows I have access to on Hulu Plus).

I quit subscribing to TV service years ago. Haven't missed it a bit. If others are too stupid to figure out the free market and how to make it work for them, then yes, I suppose we do need government regulation over even the most minute aspects of life.

Congratulations eskimospy and others, you're too dumb to live. Your government provided Oxygenation Assistant will be along shortly to remind you to breathe.

Government: Dumbing Down The World One Regulation At A Time

Edit: It's amusing to me that the OP used a shot from Idiocracy to cheer this rule. It's exactly these kind of regulations which will lead to people being unable to function in the world without step-by-step instructions from the nanny state.

"Oh no, my food fell off the fork and onto the floor! Should I still eat it? Better call the Federal Eating Bureau to figure out what I should do."

To combat this, they will start making commercials super bright. So instead of going def you'll go blind.

Good job on fighting for the rights of people to annoy millions of TV viewers.

Lets go, Wolverines!

Obviously not, since this is just being regulated now. Look up the concept of Negative Externality when you get a chance. There's $ value of my annoyance that the cable companies are not pricing in when selling higher volume commercial space.

Is the FCC free? Was the time and money spent making an agency that accepts and records complaints on commercial volume the best allocation of resources. Surely you can see some of the complaints a free market libertopian idealogue like myself could come up with if they bothered to try.

I didn't even bother to post in this thread until the OP was edited to include a swipe at free markets.

Ah yes, we wouldn't want TV viewers to be annoyed.

See my edit above about Idiocracy. If TV viewers are annoyed that Fox cancelled "Ow My Balls" will the government step in and force them to bring it back?

You're happen to be one of the "free market, zero economics knowledge" champions that I choose to make fun of. Government is the job of fixing market failures and negative externalities, look up the definition of both of the concepts before continuing.
