Howard, did NOT get dropped because of low ratings. His ratings if not number one, were very close to the top. If no one was listening, his ratings would definitely reflect that. He WAS dropped because of pressure from the psycho religious community (Christians to be more specific). These deranged lunatics have nothing better to do than try and dictate what everyone's morals SHOULD be. I've been fighting this war loooong before Howard woke up and smelled the coffee.

You militant athiests are no better than vocal minority of Christians who make the news. Next time you want to get all fired up about bigotry, I suggest you look in the mirror, because it looks like you've become what you were once fighting.

Folks, ignorant people like the person quoted here really scare the hell out of me. We have way too many braindead walking zombies in America, and they're winning.

Why do stupid, clueless, idiotic, uneducated lamebrains feel the need to inject their ignorance into a topic in which they obviously have no knowledge whatsoever?

Maybe we should ask you the same question. You certainly fit the bill of "braindead walking zombie" when it comes to your views on the rights of a property owner on his own property.
A little consistency would be nice.

The sad irony is that the fine gets levied to the content carrier and not Stern himself.
Alas that he didn't know he was going to get slapped 2 years later....he could have spent 2001 F-bombing Clear Channel right out of business. :|

Stupid FCC, stupid CC. :|

I think this is just an "attention stunt" by Clear Channel. At one point, they wanted to pull in as many listeners so they gather up as many radio stations as they can with multiple formats. Now, that the FCC is looking at them, they decide to dump Howard in order to "look good." Clearly, they don't care about the content, but would rather "appear" like they are doing the right thing.

Attention whores ... Ooops, did I say something bad? Will the FCC come after me?

ClearChannel just whacked the Regular Guys too.

Of course, they weren't funny either so I suppose no one cares.

A couple of your statements:
I'll wear my "Christianity is stupid" shirt wherever I go.
You want to protect the public, get rid of the Christian stations!

Sounds pretty intolerant of those of differ from your opinion of Christianity to me.

Tell me which one of these has to do with smoking. Smoking isn't a constitutional right. Free speech is. Big difference there, don't you think? No, I never said I agree with what the government is doing as far as ones private property is concerned, I just happened to like the new law as it pertained to my own personal situation. Is it right? No. Do I like it? Yes, because I don't smoke. I knew you were waiting with baited breath to bring that point up, so now you'll be able to go to sleep tonight now that you did your good deed for the day.
It's also not right when the town you live in decides to widen the road, and your house or front yard happens to be in the way of where they plan to expand. They force their hand and take your property, eminent domain or some bullsh!t.

Quoted form the smoking thread:
free speech doesn't include certain forms of speech including defamation, obscenity and "fighting words," of which any schoolmarm can easily accuse Stern, and not meritlessly, either

I knew you were waiting with baited breath to bring that point up, so now you'll be able to go to sleep tonight now that you did your good deed for the day.

Waiting? I had already declared in the other thread that when Howard Stern's number came up I would link to that thread to illustrate that people contribute to the problem by lending their silent assent to those kinds of laws.

I was just surprised that he got pulled by a carrier so quickly...I figured it would take a year or so before CC got tired of defending him. The controversy surrounding him, after all, can't possibly be BAD for CC's ratings.

In reality, CC needs to play Mikey Powell's lapdog so that he will allow them to continue their march towards a government licensed broadcasting monopoly. Not like they can't afford to drop $1M here and there when the FCC decides they need an honararium, so they change the rules and pick the most obvious scapegoat.

It's also not right when the town you live in decides to widen the road, and your house or front yard happens to be in the way of where they plan to expand. They force their hand and take your property, eminent domain or some bullsh!t.
But lemme guess...."As long as it isn't MY front yard they're digging up, I'm not gonna complain." If it happened in your town, would you write to your city councilman and argue on behalf of your neighbor even though no one was trying to seize your land?

If you weren't a Stern fan, would you have made this thread? If it were say...Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson that was the "victim" here, would you be quite so concerned? Would anyone?

And I guess that's _my_ worry - that so many people only care when it's THEIR lamb being slaughtered. But we all should be trying to look at the bigger picture and fight this kind of crap, no matter who is the perceived victim, because next time, the victim could be you and your freedom.

You all have a great weekend

Alright, I didn't have time to get to this yesterday, so I'll finish this off now.

Saying I am partial to my own group, is like saying, I am being partial to my own group that believes PeterPan doesn't exist. But let's put that aside. I have NO problems in letting people believe what they'd like. I have no problem with Buddhist or Muslims, or any other religions. I actually don't have a problem with Christianity either. If you want to believe in fairies, knock yourself out. The problem I DO have with Christians is that they can't keep their beliefs to themselves. They LOVE pushing their religion on everyone. As a matter of fact, their goal is to spread the "word of the Lord" to everyone. How many times have you seen an Atheist on a street corner telling everyone there is no God? How many ads in the newspaper do you see that say, there is no God? How many Atheists knock on your door at home trying to convince you there is no God? The fact of the matter is, you want to see a real bigot, look no further than the Christian right beside you. As you can see from the latest events, Janet Jackson, Howard Stern, they are VERY intolerant.

i dont give a d*rn about Howard's show - acutally i think it is/was the stupidest show on tv ever...

BUT - i am totally surprised there are people who (obviously) proudly show a american flag as their avatar - and salute censorship like the shutting down of tv-channels because it doesn't go with THEIR personal taste.

So what are you displaying the american flag for ????

I always see people being proud being americans, and ONE of the reason given is ALWAYS "freedom" of speech.

IRNOICALLY - in this country there is MORE censorship happening in the media than elsewehre.
I KNOW it since i used to live in Europe and can compare.

You people showing an american flag and supporting censorship and outrage because of (ALLEGED) tastelessness are very pathetic.

You are grown u - if you dont like ONE point of view then switch the channel ! I dont think we need the gvt to interfere with what we are allowed to see and what not.

Again...H.S. is dumb (in my opinion)...but censorship is even dumber. Every day this country goes back in time and more and more.

If you dont think that censorship was just imposed then you are mistaken my friend. War images are censored so we do not see them. Language is censored on normal television and so is nudity/language. Censorship is part of America and it has been for the longest time.
I actually do not listen to Stern. It just so happens that he hogs the mornings on one of my rock stations that I listen to and I sometimes catch a few moments of his show on my way to work when I flip the channels.
BTW, the American avatar is there cuz of my love for this country. Just because I have no problem dealing with shutting down Stern's show doesnt mean that I am not American.
Maybe you just feel threatened that your privileges and security has come under serious scrutiny and risk last couple of years. Maybe you oughta blame our politicians. If not then be prepared to deal with it.
You think so? If you recall, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List were shown UNCUT on primetime television. Now if you don't remeber these movies quite so well as I do, let me help you jog your memory. Saving Private Ryan showed the gruesome images of war IN DETAIL. The F word was all over the place in that movie too. You'll also recall the part in Schindler's List were the Nazi was banging a German woman, and yes, she was naked. And guess what, they showed BOTH boobs. Hmmmm, and Janet was in hot water for showing ONE boob for 1-2 seconds?

It looks like the FCC's rules of censorship are all over the place. They won't fine for one thing, but they'll turn around and fine someone else for the same exact thing. Kind of funny, isn't it?

Those movies were aired with warnings and ratings. People knew exactly what they were getting into if they mad the decision to watch it.

The Superbowl halftime show was thrown out at people with out any warning. People could not have made the decision to turn it off if they wanted to.

That is the difference.

And let me address this too.

Those movies were aired with warnings? Well how about if I just turned the movie on in the middle? Schindler's List was shown uncut AND commercial free so the ONLY time you would see the warning was at the beginning of a THREE HOUR PLUS movie. If Howard puts a warning before his show starts, can he say the F word too? Also, can they show "Debbie Does Dallas" on primetime television if they have a warning at the beginning of the porn? Would that be ok? The fact is, these were R rated movies and should have NEVER been shown on television UNcensored. Don't give me this warning sign crap. The FCC has vague guidelines, and apperently some people have immunity from them and others are fined heavily. Let me show you how this works. Janet Jackson shows her boob on television. The lunatic Christians get upset about this meaningless act and start calling and complaining to EVERYONE. They start writing letters (because they are losers and have nothing else to do with their time) to their congressman and other public officials. The FCC starts to feel the pressure from the psychos and feels the need to do something because the voters are getting angry. Well, when the FCC begins it's attack, it attacks EVERYTHING and tramples right over free speech. Howard Stern is just a football goal post in a lighting storm. Since he is the tallest object, he gets struck first...but he won't be the last if this storm doesn't pass soon. :|
