The FBI gathers the data, relying on local police departments to voluntarily share information about officer-involved shootings. The program only collects data on the number of so-called “justifiable homicides” reported by police, as well as information about the felonious killing and assault of law enforcement officers.

Sounds like it's currently a bit skewed in what it reports. Contrast that to http://killedbypolice.net/ (1112 as i post this)

I certainly hope it helps to see places to make improvements in police training and the general public sees it as a wakeup call.

The FBI better be careful, I don't believe an FBI agent has been found guilty of shooting someone in decades, I don't believe the figures are tracked either.

Didn't I read somewhere that most police dept's, when they rule a shooting "justified", characterize the dead person automatically as a felon, no matter what really happened?

That would certainly skew the numbers I would think, if I do remember correctly.

FBI isn't the only government agency pushing for this. CDC is big time pushing for all law enforcement related deaths to be reported to them as well. Or at least through an independent third party agency first.
