FBI raided David Copperfield's personal warehouse... and seized $2 Million in cash

LOS ANGELES - FBI agents have seized nearly $2 million in cash from a Las Vegas warehouse owned by illusionist David Copperfield, local media reports said on Thursday.

The agents also took a computer hard drive and a memory chip from a digital camera system during Wednesday's late-night operation. The reports said the raid stems from an investigation in Seattle.

"We understand there is an investigation, are in touch with the investigators, and are respecting the confidentiality of the investigation," Copperfield's attorney David Chesnoff said in a statement cited by Las Vegas broadcasters.

The local CBS affiliate KLAS-TV quoted a source as saying the cash was stashed in a safe and that agents took the cash.

Copperfield, 51, whose real name is David Kotkin, is famed for stunts such as making the Statue of Liberty disappear and walking through the Great Wall of China. He is a regular performer at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas.

The woman told Seattle police the magician raped her while she was in the Bahamas, sources said. Because the alleged incident happened abroad and the woman did not report it until she returned to the United States, Seattle authorities turned over the case to the FBI.

It almost certainly has nothing to do with the case. The feds just seize any large amount of cash they find because they can. The seizure powers of the feds is really fucked up.

You don't have the entire story? How can you make snap judgement? Has there been a trial yet? How can you know if he has broken any laws if there is no trial? Did they arrest him?

Basically, if the feds see any large amounts of cash they can seize it on suspicion that the money is part of a criminal conspiracy. They can do this without making any arrests or even charging someone. They were given this power because of our nations idiotic drug war so that the DEA could just take the cash of drug kingpins. Now they can just seize anybody's wad and the person has to prove that the money wasn't bad.
