Why do you think Xi is so aggressive at controlling his own media and pressuring businesses e.g. the NBA to suppress speech detrimental to his image? Autocrats fear their own people. If they can't keep a state-sustaining narrative in sufficient public consciousness, they'll get deposed. In this case, Trump's views are clearly heavily derived from what he's getting from Fox et. al. He is both dependent upon them supporting a separatist narrative against evil Democrats prioritizing maintenance of that over reality and dependent upon them for providing him a platform for political action, or at least readily subject to their influence. I very much think Trump himself is weak, only supported by the alignment of anti-democratic interests from those with power representing conservative political voices.

When you reduce these down, I think it goes back to moonbeam being correct. Trump would never be possible without decades of Fox news, nor would Mitch's blatant totalitarian regime that seeks to ignore all law and order, for the simple need to maintain fragile power within the tiniest of ideological minorities within the most powerful country in the world.
