Well, if it does I'm defecting to Canada ASAP. and by defecting I mean sneaking across the border and working in some backwoods village for the rest of my life.

It's pretty easy to do technologically. Your ISP knows what packets are being transported to/from you as anyone who has a bandwidth limit on their connection already knows.

Odds of it happening are low. You Yankees have the admirable quality of squawking very loudly in situations in which you're presumed guilty without trial.

I'd be surprised if the ISPs don't already do something like this. Anyone have a transfer limit? yea...

"Terrorists coordinate their plans cloaked in the anonymity of the Internet, as do violent sexual predators prowling chat rooms," Mueller said in a speech at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Boston.

Ridiculous fearmongering.

Fearmongering? Yes. Ridiculous? No - it's the new standard of motivating taxpayers this adminstration has set.

I believe ISP's already record everything you do while connected to their servers. They log everything.

It takes a court order to release that info to a law enforcement agency.

Almost everything this administration has done is ridiculous...almost.

A) it's bullshit
B) Republicans? Did you even read the article? The democrats are at it too. http://news.com.com/Data+retention+bill...t+week/2100-1028_3-6118283.html?tag=nl

This is way over the line. But if it does get there, I can guarantee that some very good point to point encryption protocols will be developed that allow every piece of traffic going from one IP to another to be encrypted. Not like HTTPS which only secures the content.

This is nothing new, the government has been trying to do this for years. There's just too much data for ISP's to do it. A while back on TWiT they had Dane Jasper on who runs a small ISP in Cali talking about this, pretty informative. Here's the link for the show if anyone is interested: http://www.twit.tv/39

Unfortunately we seem to have inculcated a fair number of our population with the notion "why should I care, I have nothing to hide".

Ah yes, the "I have nothing to hide" line. I love that one. I have news for all you people that think that, watch someone long enough and you'll find something they want to hide.

This stuff is already happening. This new law or act will only make it more public what is being done.

Hmm...while that's one way of looking at it, I'd think another, more productive option, rather than running away, would be to try and make a change for the better.

Ridiculous fearmongering.
I wouldn't doubt that terrorists do coordinate their plans online, so that much is accurate. Anecdotally, much of the evidence against the "Toronto 17" group of terrorists up here was gathered from a invite-only forum they were using. That end of things is pretty well documented.

Of course, tracking all of us based on this tiny, tiny percentage is crazy and an obvious infringement on our rights.

This is very old news.

I installed not only ISP tracking equipment but people tracking equipment over the last 6 years and still installing it.

Enjoy

Dave, if you are so morally opposed to what they are doing, why do you continue to help them do it? Surely it would be easier on your conscience to flip burgers at McDonalds.

meh, I'm not a fan of politics or knowing the details of various laws. Plus unless i joined a specific party I'd never get taken seriously.

Then again I have taken place in several anti-bush protests and am a member of sds. Honestly I'd rather enjoy being free rather than being oppressed and fighting it.
