Is it possible to fax something from your computer? My fax is acting funny, and I have a lot to fax, thanks!

If you're running XP Pro, there's fax software built in. To check if it's enabled go to Control Panel -->Add or Remove Programs -->Add/Remove Windows Components (on left side of screen).

Make sure Fax Services is checked - then you can send anything you want to fax to 'Print' and select 'Fax' as the printer - the rest is self-explanatory. Been using this myself for years since I hate installing unnecessary apps, works great.
(not sure about Vista though, but trying doing a similar search in Control Panel and see what turns up)

Remember to run phone line from Fax machine into the computer modem. (Simple common sense, but people forget to)
When you activate the Fax "printer", you may have to do some configuration.

No, I've never had an actual fax machine - it just requires your telephone connected to pc modem. Then faxes are sent and received as scanned images...

It will use your modem to do the electronic part of the faxing. You must plug a phone line into the modem. You can send a document file, photo, or scanned image by selecting print and using the fax service as the printer. To receive you may have to configure it to auto answer, then it will receive it as a file to print at your leisure.
