:disgust:
I'm having a hard time getting the FAX driver built into my XP Pro SP2 system to work. I have an Agere Softmodem. It will dial, but not from the FAX driver.
Hardware manager tells me:
This device is working properly
I can query it from the Diagnostics tab.
I can set up a dial-up internet connection and it will dial the number.
But it will not dial from the FAX driver.
I have tried to FAX from MS Office and also directly from the FAX console.
On other compuers, the FAX Nonitor will pop up nd show progress, but not on this PC.

What's wrong?
I'm at my wits end.

Thanks for any help.

Thank you for the pointer. I had already installed the optional FAX service, so I de-installed it and then re-installed it and followed all of the instructions described in the article 306550 that you pointed me to.

Then I started the FAX monitor manually, expanded it, and tried to fax directly from the FAX console.

Unfortunately, it didn't work. As before, after the FAX wizard completes, there is no action. No fax is pending in the console.

To get more information, I installed SIS Sandra to see what more I could learn. The communications devices information appears below. Note that Sandra thinks that the port is in use. Could some other program be blocking FAX access to the port?

Yes. I used the dial up connection to test the modem.

That is your answer to your problem...If you want to fax anything then don't use dial-up. Dial-up blocks fax from dialing to send fax.

Thank you for pointing this out. I'm embarrassed that I didn't think of this sooner. I set up the dial up connection solely to test the modem My regular internet connection is cable broadband. I have since removed the dial up connection. The new Sandra print out appears below. Note the extensive FAX support.

Unfortunately, The modem still won't dial for the FAX wizard. I feel jinxed.

I am thinking...I don't know what kind of fax program you have. maybe on your fax setting be sure your fax is set to pulse dial instead of rotary dial or something like that.

This may be a driver issue for your softmodem. The "Modemsite" has a good article about how Windows Update has probably updated your softmodem to driver version 2.1.56 (which yours is showing, according to your last post). Unfortunately, these drivers might not be the best for your modem. Modemsite recommends version 2.1.54, as 2.1.56 disables things like V.92 support.

Now, this doesn't necessarily coorelate to your fax issue, but I see words like "ERROR" in your latest text output for your current drivers, which is usually never a good thing.

Modemsite is now a "pay" site. They won't let you download new drivers unless you pay, at the very least $1.59 or something.

However, I would suggest this: Go into your Device Manager and find your modem, then choose to "Rollback Driver". You should get an option for earlier drivers to install.

You'll also have to adjust your Automatic Updates to make sure this driver isn't overwritten again. I would set Automatic Updates to the "Let me know when new updates are ready", then choose which ones you want to install. You should get an option to remove the modem updates from the list of future updates.

Anyway, try rolling back your drivers to 2.1.54, reboot, and try again.

Here's the modemsite.com blurb:

The modem driver is a major factor in how well the modem will perform. Modemsite's Download Area offers the latest drivers and Modem-on-Hold applets for SV92P modems. As of 15-Jun-05, the latest generic driver is 2.1.54 for Windows 2000 & XP only, and 2.1.47 for all other versions of Windows. The latest Modem-on-Hold applet is version 1.72. (The 2.1.47 XP/2000 driver from Modemsite is digitally signed.) The 2.1.47 XP driver is offered in 2 versions: 1 routes call-progress audio to the system audio and is suitable for modems that don't include an onboard speaker; the other version routes call progress audio to the on-board modem speaker.)

Microsoft's Windows Update currently (July '05) has a 2.1.56 driver available for Windows 2000 & XP - however, this driver has V.92 disabled: using the driver from Windows Update will result in loss of all V.92-functionality including the ability to do Modem-on-hold. Unfortunately, this driver has been marked such that users who have Windows Automatic Updates turned on may receive this driver automatically and without notification. The drivers available from Modemsite Downloads do not have V.92 disabled. However, in some cases, without changing Automatic Updates to off, or to notify before installation, the V.92-disabled driver from Windows Update may be automatically re-installed. Users who experience loss of V.92/modem-on-hold functionality should either rollback to the prior driver, or download and install a driver from Modemsite. Then, ensure that the Modemsite driver will not be replaced by setting Automatic Updates (Start->Control Panel->System-> Automatic Updates tab: to Notify me but don't automatically download or install them. Examine each update you are notified about, and Cancel installation of any update for the Agere softmodem. Modemsite does not have a 2.1.56 version on the site - there are no changes from the .54 version that would affect connectivity or modem performance.

http://www.modemsite.com/56K/sv92p.asp

If you can't rollback your driver, it might be worth $1.59 (30 day subscription) to download the drivers from modemsite.

The 2.1.56 did indeed come with the most recent Windows upgrade. I do have my Windows update configured to allow me to select the updates. In a moment of weakness, I succumbed to the "latest is greatest" craze and accepted the update. Silly me.

A few days ago, I rolled back the driver as you suggest. My current driver is 2.1.51 as is shown in the new SI Sandra listing below. My problem, however, remains: no Faxing.

Trust me on this one, these designations about membership here are only due to the numbers of posts one has made. The term "Platinum" really means nothing, but thanks, anyway.

By the way, I noticed via a quick search that you've posted this on a Microsoft forum, as well as Wugnet, too. (Kay, right?) That's fine, and a good idea. I commend you for that.

You seem to have a good grasp on things, so here's what I would take a look at:

You already have the Fax Console installed, but it's not working. What I would do is this:

Have you run the Fax Configuration Wizard from the Fax Console? I know, I know...sounds like a dumb question, but one of the items to configure in the Fax Wizard is the modem you want to use. I'd take another look at that. Also, make sure you configure everything else that needs to be configured in the wizard.

If that looks good, and it still doesn't work, try this:

Click Start. Click Run. Type in the box (without quotes) "fxsadmin.msc". That's the Fax Security Manager. Maybe some permissions issue there. See what else it says. There may be an event log in that applet. See if it mentions anything about problems.

Speaking of Event Logs, XP has some other event logs that log system and application issues.

Open up Control Panel. Click on Administrative Tools. Click on Event Viewer. Look in the "System" and "Application" logs for anything with Red or Yellow icons. Red is an absolute error. Yellow is a warning. Otherwise, look for anything in those logs that relate to faxing.

A good way to see if there will be any events logged there is to try and fax again just before opening up the event viewer. That way, any fax errors (if logged) will be at the top of the list(s).

Please report back.
