Heyas,

I know this is possible but how can you have a telephone and a fax machine share the same phone line and have an answering machine involved as well. Basicall if a person calls and no one answers they can leave a message but if it's a fax, the fax machine needs to answer it and receive the fax and not have the fax noises go to the answering machine.

Is this a special function of the fax machine or do I need a fancy answering machine or what? Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Thanks.

if the fax machine can work with an answering machine--then it can work with an answering machine.
most fax machines can.

fax answers first then tosses to answering machine if its not a fax.

So the caller would need to hear the high squeal of a fax machine before they're brought to the answering machine? I would think most people would hang up the instant they hear that squeal.

Actualy I found out it's the other way around. As long as the fax machine has a phone jack for hooking a phone up to the machine, it will work. You set the fax to NOT answer the call. Then let the answering machine pick it up. When that happens, the other fax will start the handshaking which will activate my fax. When that happens, my fax will terminate the line to the answering machine and receive the fax.

Guy I talked to at OM said just about every fax made these days can do it.
