The PC gaming forum has a thread like this so I thought I'd get a console version going.

What's your favourite year in console gaming before the 360/Wii/PS3 era?

Me, I think I'd have to say 2006. Yeah, it's on the border of my restrictions but so many great games came out during that period. Namely Okami, which is one of my favourite titles. Other than that, probably 1998 for Pokemon on the Gameboy and Zelda for the N64. Two of the best console titles ever made.

For all of gaming it'd be 2001, the year I started playing Diablo 2.

For console gaming...I dunno. Probably when Tekken 3 came out on the PS1...or going way back when Solar Jetman came out on the NES. Such a great game.

It's hard for me to pick just one year. 1997 was great for FF7 and FFT, but some of the early '90 years were great for stuff like Link to the Past and Mario Kart.

Edit: Goldeneye also came out in 1997.

I'd have to say a couple years after Halo came out on Xbox, but still before Halo 2. So many nights with 4 Xboxs and 16 people playing. 15 minute KofH on Hang Em High...kill counts into 4-500. I couldn't get enough pistol lovin'.

Then Live blew up with Halo 2 and no one wanted to go through the work of a LAN setup so we'd play online, get frustrated with lag and end up quitting.

I thought about mentioning the orignal NES days, but Battle Toads has left me forever scarred!

I dunno, probably 2004. Doom 3 came out which I liked quite a bit, but then HL2 came out fairly soon after and it was FAN FUCKING TASTIC. That with CS:S was awesome. I played a ton of CS:S when it first came out.

I'm going to say 2003 for a few reasons...

The main reason why I chose 2003 was Knights of the Old Republic. I mean, damn, I love that game so much! It's sharing the same spot with Ocarina of Time as my favorite game of all time!

Another reason would be Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. I played the HELL out of that game back in the day!

Also, 2003 was a groundbreaking moment for me for FPS. I bought my first FPS, Call of Duty. And my God, that game was so awesome!

I'm a huge Star Wars fan. After I played Jedi Outcast in 2002, I wanted more. Enter Jedi Academy. So damn fun!

EDIT: Aw dammit, I thought this was PC Gaming!

I'm going to go with early to mid 90's. Yes, I'm old...whatever.

I was a big fan of Sonic fan and just got into rpg's at the time. It was just a great time..I have great memories of games like the Sonic series, Shining Force, Warsong, FF3/6, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, etc..I could go on and on. Oh yah, how about SF2 and MK at around that time as well.

I remember 2004 being a huge year. Don't remember all the games but there was far cry, half life 2, halo 2... then right at the start of 05 was resident evil 4, which to me was surprisingly awesome. Yeah I'm throwing in PC games but I was more of a PC gamer before the current gen.

For the NES/SNES days, the years kind of blend together for me, I couldn't pick a particular year.
