Favorites/Documents don't ever show up

For some reason the documents tab on the start menu for me in Win2k, doesn't show my most recent documents, and also when I go to IE, and I click on the URL bar it doesn't show my most recent visited sites. Does anybody know how those features are turned on and off on Win2k? I'd like to be able to see some of my history at a glance.
