Favorite vacation spots...

Dubrovnik Croatia is awesome, but not cheap.

I really liked Costa Rica, super cheap, loads of fun...lots of activities to do, cannonyeering, sitting on the beach, snorkeling/diving, white water rafting, loads of hiking, gorgeous place.

I love the city stuff too, all of the times I have been to the EU have been a blast.
 
Trips in the last 6 months:

Oktoberfest - Munich Germany - I went last year and had a blast. A total of a week. I recommend going during the week. Weekends are absolute crazy amounts of people. Much easier to get a table in the beer tents. Extremely fun meeting people from all over the world. I plan to go back again this year.

Paris - France - Beautiful city with lots to do. I don't think I've ever walked around so much but wow...lots of history there.

Turks & Caicos - Providenciales: Kinda expensive and very laid back. Friendly locals. Lots of diving and snorkeling. Beaches is there, expensive but it's an all inclusive resort - very family friendly.

Alaska in the summer if you're not one for the cold. Homer to Denali - pretty much anything you can imagine when it comes to the great outdoors. This winter I'm planning to learn how to kite-ski 🙂
 
Prague is gorgeous and a lot of fun, great place to visit if you like beer. It's not nearly as cheap as it used to be but compared to Western European countries it's still very low cost. Great beer.
 
Look into places that haven't been over-exploited. My favorite spot is St.Vincent. No big resorts or crowds. Mostly empty amazing beaches. Rain-forests with wild parrots flying overhead. Some of the best snorkeling I've ever done right from the beaches. No long expensive boat rides. The shallow calm bays made it easy and it felt more like diving because everything was so close. St. Vincent hasn't been "found" yet. It's harder to get to but the exchange rate is so good it makes up for the added airfare in what you save in everyday costs in just a couple of days. You can spend a month or more for less then the cost on many other Caribbean islands for just a single week. Easy island hopping via ferries. Super nice people and one of the lowest crime rates in the Caribbean.

Ladera resort on St. Lucia. A little piece of heaven on earth.

Definitely worth a visit if you can afford it. Even for only a couple of nights.

Prague is a lot of fun.

To go on a budget, arrive mid summer and try to rent one of the dorm rooms at the local colleges. I did that the last time I was there, and managed to get a room for ~80 crowns/night. Back then that was $2US. Now its about $5.

Definitely not the most comfortable accomodations, but you will spend so little time in your room that you just won't care.

A few years back we had to go to Newport, RI for a wedding. I begged my wife to leave me at home since I was convinced it would be a horrible place to visit. Shame on me, it was a great place for short trip, had a great time.

The Newport mansions are incredible. Definitely worth a visit. Some of them put the White House to shame.
 
Maui is probably my favorite place i've been so far. the place is just beautiful and the scenery is indescribable, and there is A LOT to go off and explore on your own. went there on my honeymoon back in 2008. best place i've ever been.

i've also been to Aruba, Barbados, Cancun, Bahamas, and Nicaragua.

if you are looking for a wild place where it's just non-stop fun if you like to party and also have a great deal of excursions to do, Cancun is perfect for that. i've been there twice and both times were a blast. i still want to go back another time.

in bahamas we stayed at the atlantis resort and loved it so much that we really never left the place. everything there is extremely high end and the grounds are indescribable as well. the food there was probably the best food i've ever had while on a vacation as well. i definitely want to go back here, especially once we have kids.

aruba is also very nice as is barbados. i'm going back to aruba next month and can't wait. i went to nicaragua w/my wife cause her family is there, and we stayed with her family but also did some tourist stuff. saw some very nice places while there, including an island off the coast named corn island which is beautiful, but this isn't a place i would go if i didn't marry her. well i'd go to corn island, but not just to stay in with the locals.
 
a small town called villa de leyba in colombia, a few hours from bogota. i would go there for a get-away weekend.
 
My wife and I like to travel to western europe (we've both done study abroads there as well) and our favorite place is Ireland. I cannot emphasize enough how friendly the people are (friendliest country we've been to by far. I'm not talking about the staff/employees being friendly. I am talking about meeting random people in a bar who buy you drinks because they want to hear where you're from friendly. The airport security agent is super exicted you chose to vacation in his country friendly) The scenery is amazing and driving is a fun adventure itself! (assuming you go off the beaten path - which you should!) I hear it gets crowded in the summer but when we went in the spring there were very few crowds. They have great hiking trails with mountains, rolling green hills and ocean views

Damnit - now I want to go back....

We did a cruise at the end of the year and had a good time. It was very relaxing but is a different kind of vacation. We prefered the more active trips we've made to Europe but think a cruise would make a nice change of pace every couple of years or so

I think we're finally heading over to Ireland in the fall -- the wife wants to go really badly and the PM you sent me about it last year was really helpful.

went there once. beautiful place. did a mST of hiking. next time I go, I wanna hit some of the biking trails and also do some canoeing

I've been to a decent number of places - mostly islands. Aruba, Bahamas (GBI), Cancun, Saba, St. Martin....but my favorite by far is Hawaii. We visited Kauai and Maui, and there's just something about those islands that blow all Caribbean islands away. Its not the best for beaches, but the combination of all the things you can do there make up for the pristine calm beaches you can find in the Caribbean.
 
Northern Minnesota is my all time favorite. I go there to fish. I'm lucky that my family has a log cabin there. The fishing is best I ever did and we caught walleyes, Northern pikes, bass, perch, and crappies. If you are looking for a fishing trip I'd recommended Northern Minnesota.

So are all the towns up North along the Istrian coast in Croatia. Porec, Pula Vrsar and especially Rovijn. It is so beautiful there and not really expensive. You can rent a room from a local for cheap. That is what the Germans do. Look for the signs that say "Zimmer."
 
On my reclining sectional at home, playing some video games, eating junk food. Or going out to the pier and watching the waves. Yeah, I'm very very boring and low budget.
 
Barcelona, Vienna, and Tokyo are three of my favourites, plus anywhere in France. Going to Budapest in August, so we'll see where that slots in.

Marfa, Balmorhea State Park, the Chihuahuan desert, and Big Bend National Park.

Big Bend is the least visited National Park in the US. You can camp there for weeks and never see another human. In my three days there I saw only 3-4 people, and that was at the ranger station and general store.

It is a desert, so it will be hot during the day and cold at night. It is a harsh, empty, and beautiful land. Think all the old western movies you have ever seen, most were filmed in the area around Marfa, Tx.
 
Wow, lots of good information here. i hate you guys, now my list is about triple of what it was when this thread started. How do I freaking decide?
