Favorite Software Based CPU Cooling?

I have searched here and everywhere for hours regarding sortware cooling, and can't figure out which, if any, are worthwhile. I've got a new HTPC with a fairly basic Gigabyte board and an XP2200. I put my old Thermalright AX7 heatsink on it (big & heavy) and a Vantec 80mm fan on a controller.

But I'd like a software based program to step in and drop the temp way down when the system sits idle for a few hours here and there. Much like "speedswitch" does for my laptop.

Please, make a recommendation, I'm lost!

Hmm. So is this a dumb question, impossible to answer, wrong forum, already been discussed 100 times, what? Anyone?

No info on your system leads most to ignore your post.

I never use software cooling nor the HALT command built-in to the Mobo BIOS, nor do most Hardcore OC fanatics. It slows things down, and can create issues as the limits of the setup are approached. Most hardcore just add a bigger fan and don't really consider it a hindrance.

General Hardware would get more hits for you, as many people with Silent setups, and general-use really hate noise.

Thanks for the information all. I didn't post much more than what CPU I had because I didn't really see how having 2 sticks of 256, a Hauppauge PVR 250, a Radeon 9600XT, etc. affected me wanting to throttle back the CPU to keep it cool. Other than the chip itself (Athlon XP as opposed to 64 or a P-III or something) was there anything else pertinent? I could have mentioned I'm running XP I guess. Note taken though that my underclocking is sort of the reverse of the majority of the user goals here. Perhaps Cases & Cooling would have been a better choice.

Looking up "Rain" and "S2kctl" on google have opened up a ton of new prorams I can check out now - in addition to those are Vcool, CPUIdle, Waterfall, and others. I'm open to more suggestions and opinions on these and others of course, but that's what I needed to get me started.

Thanks -
