Favorite place to ski in MN?

Just getting into skiing, but picking it up very fast. Looking for suggestions for fun places to go. Price is not an issue. Thanks!

Ugh....might as well drive into Wisconsin and ski on the few trash heaps they have over there. Skiing in the Midwest is a joke....but I don't blame ya for trying 'cause skiing is awesome.

I realize you get plenty of snow there, but do you have large enough hills there to ski? I drove through last summer across I-90, and don't remember seeing anything high enough to even skateboard down, let alone ski down...

Isn't MN fairly flat? 😕

That's why it's hard to find good places to ski around here.

Just checked out Lusten though. Looks promising.

I think Northern MN has much larger hills then Southern MN does. At least, when I looked at the Lutsen webpage that's where it was located. 1-2 mile runs?

But yes, I would love to go west. Just can't manage it right now. 🙁

I'm from Duluth, MN but I've always played hockey so i never really got into skiing. Anyways, Spirit Mountain in Duluth isn't bad, but Lutsen is probably your best bet.

Lutsen is great, provided you can stand the cold. My brother and I go up there when I come in town to visit, sometimes it's a day trip (leave at 5am from the cities, get there at 10, ski until dark, go home).

Wild Hill (mountain) blows, my parents live 30min away and I used to go there a lot. Avoid that and go to Afton or Welch. Afton alone is ~400x better than Wild.

MN skiing isn't the best, but it's something.

When you suck at skiing, Hyland Hills and Buck Hill are just fine. Afton is nice because of all the trees and how spread out it is. Eventually, you'll want to go to Spirit and Lutsen to experience a more mountain feel. If you don't mind a few hours more in the car - I'd go past Lutsen and check out Candy Mountain, Sundance, Loch Lomond and Baldy? in Thunder Bay. Bring warm clothes and a clothespin! (paper factory stinks up there) Just a bit farther away is Michigan's upper peninsula - Blackjack, Porcupine Mountains, etc.. - great skiing for the midwest!

This is true. The place up by Deluth is ok and Welch is alright, but once you've skied in the rockies, there is no going back to MN.

Take up cross country skiing.

You take what you can get when it's cheap and available. I have run everything from the rockies to the swiss alps, MN isn't great, but if you really want to do some runs, then you have to take what you can get.

Thanks for the replies guys and gals! From the sounds of it, heading up to Duluth is probably my best bet for some good "local" skiing. Thanks again!
