There are many good movies about the military with great battles, inspiring scenes and awesome gunfights, what is your favorite military movie moment?

Although I do love some of the good fights such as normandy beach on saving private ryan I would have to say my favorite military people are the bumbling national guard guys in the rambo movies. They crack me up everytime and I love to tease my friend about being in the national guard. List your own!

The "Why We Fight" episode of Band of Brothers. When they are walking through the woods Picante (sp?) asks "Doesn't this remind you of Bastogne?". Then Luz replies "Yeah, now that you mention it. Except there is no snow, we have warm food in our belly's, and the trees arent fucking exploding from kraut artillery. Other than that, yeah, it kind of reminds me of Bastogne"

In Gettysburg the charge of the 20th Maine when Col. Chamberlain yells "Bayonets!" and they charge down the hill at the incoming Confederates.

Runner up has to be the grave scene at the end of SPR where the old Ryan asks his wife to tell him he's a good man. (god damn you Spielberg)

I like the Vietnam era choppers lifting off/touching down with some good hippie music, like Fortunate son, Bad Moon Rising, Magic Carpet Ride, etc

One of the greatest scenes ever IMO is in Platoon when the chopper is taking off and you see Willem DaFoe running out of the jungle, after being shot by Tom Berenger, and he stumbles through the grass and is shot several more times and is killed by the Vietnamese as his men watch from above.

Very powerful and very well shot. It got a little dusty in the theater the first time I saw it.

That one scene was the first time that I really appreciated the dichotomy of the feelings about world war between those who fought and those who didn't.

Those who were at home only saw the end result - victory for the US, heroism, freedom, etc.

Those who served relived the fear and trauma of battle, the loss of fallen comrades, and the hopelesness and frustration of a long military campaign. When they returned home, they were seen as heroes, but to themselves, they were physically and emotionally ravaged people who questioned their value to society every day for the rest of their lives.

I liked two scenes in The Final Countdown; the first where the two F14's flew past Senator Chapman's boat, and the second where they flew past the two Japanese Zeroes, shocking the hell out of the pilots.

R. Lee Ermey making Vincent D'Onfrio choke himself in Full Metal Jacket. Of course, my son is in USMC basic as of this week, so that might have something to do with it.

When the Brother is firing that machine gun at the advancing soldiers

Silmido
When the soldiers all drop their grenades and jump on them, all while their commanding officer is pleading to let him talk to them, while the bag of candy drops.

Dong Mak Gol
When the Soldiers are just standing in the village smiling, while the bombs start dropping.

When Cusack and his squad take that hill in "The Thin Red Line." Shows what a well-trained, cohesive group can do when necessary.

The Bastogne episode of "Band of Brothers."

Anyone else watch that show on History Channel where soldiers recount personal war stories and the events that lead to them being awarded the Medal of Honor?
good stuff.

The BoB Bastogne episode has been mentioned a couple of times now. I was recently in the area and decided to drive down and have a look. The city is enormously pro-American, there are tributes all over the city, there is a nice memorial and a museum exhibit that has a section that recreates the environment and atmosphere of the battle of the bulge, with trees all over, loud artillery and dense fog. Afterwards, I visited a US Army cemetery in Belgium, the sheer number of gravesites instantly brings a tear to the eye. Very emotional place.

An often overlooked movie when it comes time to talk about 'war movies' is Gardens of Stone. There are some amazing scenes in it that deal with how the military (specifically the Old Guard) honor the fallen upon their return home.

Gettysburg was great, but my favourite in that is during Pickets (I know I spelled that wrong) Charge. It's right when the Union infantry get up from behind the stone wall, raise the flag and shoot their first volley. Love how many re-enactors they got to do that battle.

Another is one someone already mentioned in Platoon where Willem Dafoe is running, and the sound fades to radio chatter as the Hueys circle overhead.

Any Band of Brothers episode is good, but thats already been mentioned. I also like Black Hawk Down. We Were Soldiers is good because it also shows what the families back home went through. Also who can forget Top Gun?

Black Hawk Down:
Eversman chucks the Infrared Beacon on the roof to mark the Air Strike. The Somalies are all WTF and then the little birds come in. Absolute ownage. And those were tiny. Imagine what an Apache or full blown Raptor could do.

Gettysburg:
The Battle of Little Round Top. All of it.

Saving Private Ryan:
Stroming Normandy aka the first 10 min of the movie

Master and Commander:
The Opening and Climax Battles.

French Captain: "English whaler, this is your final warning. Stop now, or we will destroy you!"

English Captain: "LET FLY!" (cry is echoed by the officers, cannons roll out)

Transformers:
That scene with the special forces fighting that Scorpion Robot thing in the desert. Not really a war movie, but IIRC they hired a real squad of Marine to play those roles to improve the realism.

That's the name of that movie! I've been looking for that.

I remember there was an interview with one of the original German machine gunner that estimated he gunned down over a hundred of the men that landed on that beach - war is really hell.
