I can't think of too many directors on the spot, so give suggestions. The ones I'm thinking of now are:

Steven Soderburgh (sp?)
Steven Spielberg
George Lucas
Ridley Scott
Wes Anderson
Ron Howard
??

Ridley Scott and Soderburg are excellent. Ron Howard made The Princess Bride, one of my all time favorites.

James Cameron for the first two Terminators and True Lies. Also, Mel Gibson has turned out to be pretty good.

personally for me, if i had to narrow it down to just one director... give me sergio leone. tough considering i had to overlook coppola (this pains me to no end... godfather, outsiders, apoc now), mann (love his work, but he still has some good films in him), scorsese (another one that burns me, especially since i love his work with deniro), kurosawa (just rewatched rashomon this past weekend!!!). and i feel really bad because hitchcock didnt get the nod either.

edit: why leone? guy was a great visionary. his style still influences some of hollywood's best to this day. the pacing of his movies was perfect. long movies didnt seem that long and kept you interested. the guy just had amazing talent and i respect that to no end. it still pains me though to not even mention de palma, stone, aronofsky or even david fincher. damn those film courses. ;)

After watching Robert Altman at the awards, I'd have to pick him. He was funny as hell.

LOL, I was writing my post and did not see yours. Altman did some stuff in the 50's and 60's:)

Yeah, TV stuff but he will be remembered for his 70s films.

Worst IMO is Tony Scott, I hate how he does that stupid ass camera flicker crap, I swear he ruins movies that could be good just by that alone almost ruined Man on Fire with that crap.

Best IMO is

Ridley Scott
James Cameron
Bryan Singer
Clint Eastwood

M. Night Shyamalan is one of my favorites. Can't wait for Lady In The Water to release but I hope it's a little better than The Village. Great ending but I was a bit let down with it not being nearly as scary as I had anticipated.
