how long does it have to be to qualify as a monologue? There are several nice long pieces in A Man For All Seasons that I quite like.

In almost every audition I have done that requires a comic monologue and a serious monologue, for the serious one, I choose from the play Steel Magnolias (was a play before the movie): (M'Lynn is at the cemetary after her daughters funeral)

M'Lynn:
I'm fine.. I'm fine.. I'm fine.. I'm FINE! [sobbing/screaming] I could jog all the way to Texas and back.. but my daughter can't!! She never could!! Oh.. God.....I'm so mad I don't know what to do!! I wanna know why! I wanna know WHY Shelby's life is over!! I wanna HOW that baby will EVER know how wonderful his mother was.. Will he EVER know what she went THROUGH for him? Oh God I wanna know WHY? WHY? Lord...I wish I could understand! No...NO...NO!! It's not supposed to happen this way! I'm supposed to go first!! I've always been ready to go first! I don't think I can take this.. I.. I don't think I can take this! I just wanna hit somethin'! I just wanna hit somebody.. till they feel as bad as I do!! I just wanna hit something! I wanna hit it HARD!

Prior: We can't just stop. We're not rocks -- progress, migration, motion is... modernity. It's animate, it's what living things do. we desire. Even if all we desire is stillness, it's still desire for. Even if we go faster than we should. We can't wait. And wait for what? God...

He isn't coming back.

And even if He did...

If He ever did come back, if He ever dared show His face, or His Glyph or whatever in the Garden again... if after all this destruction, if after all the terrible days of this terrible century He returned to see... how much suffering His abandonment created, if all He has to offer is death, you should sue the bastard. That's my only contrbution to all this theology. sue the bastard for walking out. how dare He.

from Angels in America. that play.
