I know this thread probably won't get any attention, but Miles Davis is one of the greatest 20th century composers of any genre, not just jazz.

Anyways, my favorite album of his is either In a Silent Way or Bitches Brew. Its so hard to choose.

The new remastered sessions of those albums are absolutely glorious.

Excellent choice. That used to be my favorite until I heard his electric stuff. But you can't take away from that album. Bill Evans, Trane, Miles, Adderly, Wynton Kelly, Cobb, and Chambers, jesus you couldn't ask for more. Miles and Evans are my favs on that recording.

Here's another Kind of Blue vote. I could listen to that CD on repeat and not get tired of it, I love to listen to it with headphones. I get a different feel for the music that way. I like what I've heard of Birth of the Cool but have never listened to it like I have Kind of Blue. I haven't heard any of his electric stuff either. I like the Cool Jazz period. I took a Jazz History class in college. :) ( I had been listening to Kind of Blue before that class though)

Yea, Birth of the Cool is definately one of his best too. Just another example of Miles starting another genre of music. God, he was so damn influential.

Another vote for Kind Of Blue.

Generally hate to go with the majority, but have to on this one :).

BTW there is no such thing as a bad Miles Davis album. They are all (at least the half dozen or so I've heard) are wonderful.

my roomate played it around me for a while and i thought it was pretty cool. after we learned about him in my african american music class though i definitely had a higher level of respect for em. i don't think there's an album of choice i would go with, just grab a bunch of them, put them on a CD and label it "Chill Music" and i'm there. :)

I started listening to Miles Davis totally by accident. I was making a cd for a friend just downloading whatever I could find off of napster. I happened to listen to a couple of songs and was HOOKED! I have to admit though that I only care for slow jazz. I took all of the slow jazz from my friends cd and made one for myself (about a yr ago). Last week I discovered that my cd is 1 song short of Kind of Blue. This album rocks! I am now trying to make a second MD slow jazz cd - if morpheus would cooperate.

Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain are both completely brilliant. I'm not a huge fan of his later fusion stuff, although I respect it musically.

I also have some live Newport Jazz festival stuff that is well worth a listen.

*sigh* this thread is reminding me how much the jazz scene here in Atlanta sucks.
