Over a year ago, Richard Simmons stormed off David Letterman's show in a huff. Friday night, Dave flew Richard in on a wire. As soon as Richard's feet hit the stage, he ran over behind the guest chairs and demanded that Dave give him a kiss. Dave said he'd kiss him after the interview, and to "go sit down, Richard." Richard scooted his chair right up to Dave's desk and tried to touch any part of Dave that was close enough. Richard said he'd been friends with one of Dave's producers, Maria Pope, for 16 years, so when Dave was having his quintuple bypass, Maria had told him which hospital Dave was in (the camera switched to Maria, who denied this hotly). Richard said he'd flown to New York, gone to the hospital, been told by the nurses that Dave wasn't up to visitors, and flown home. Then Richard suggested that he and Dave go to a sperm bank and have their donations mixed and used to impregnate the aforementioned Maria Pope, who did not seem thrilled at the prospect. Richard was hurt that Dave had never come to his home or asked him to his house. Then he asked Dave if he could have an extended hug instead of a kiss, but Dave said, of the two, he'd choose the kiss, because it would be over sooner. He asked Richard to stand up, gave a hand signal, and Richard was soon dangling above the stage on his wire, with Dave squirting a fire extinguisher at him. Upon alighting, Richard told Dave he loved him. "I love you, too, Richard," Dave replied. "No, I love you, David." "I love you, Richard." At the end, Richard didn't get his kiss, at least on-camera, because Dave had him yanked to the ceiling and towed off into the wings.
