I unlocked my friend's iphone 3g about a year ago so he could use T-mobile. one day his brother updates to 3.1.3 and he lost his unlock. he's got the newest baseband and bootloader for the 3G so there is nothing I can do for him except buy the phone (heh, i'm on AT&T) and use it myself. I've pretty much got a stock 3.1.3 config jailbroken waiting for your suggestions. There are just too many apps and I don't want to sift through them.

i definitely need a good RDP client to get into my XP x64 machine from school. any of your other favorite apps I'd be interested to hear about.

thanks

I'll try to rate these...

Facebook
Bing
GTA: CTW
Redfin
Slacker Radio
Mint.com
Rock Band
AIM
Yelp
RDP Lite
AroundMe
Citibank
Chase
ATT myWireless
Zynga Live Poker
Photoshop Mobile
Assassin's Creed
Comcast (for forwarding my CDV to my cell)

i tried irdesktop at first because you don't need to install a server app on the machine you're terminalling into. no right-click capability but otherwise ok... i will probably have to try one of the many VNC apps

LogMeIn is kinda expensive, but by far the best VNC I've used on the iPhone. I also love Urbanspoon for finding places to eat when I'm in new areas. Convert Bot is a pretty sweet unit converter, I love the interface.

lost his unlock after update to 3.1.3 on his 3G? I think I better not jailbreak my 3G for use with tmo

So I did the jailbreak today - was curious about it and my contract runs out in one day anyway... and boy oh boy, was I missing out! The phone feels AMAZING now (it's a 16GB 3GS). I used the Spirit application - took one click to jailbreak haha

Anyway, installed Winterboard, SBSettings, Reminder, Backgrounder, ProSwitcher and parts of Glasklar theme. Plus a few more plugins to SBSettings, for rotation lock etc.

Holy sh!t, the phone went from great to amazing! Task switching is perfect - I can finally IM and browse and switch tasks so fast and easy (it looks like on WebOS).

Anything else you guys can suggest? I was thinking about MiWi, but it's $10... Also, the Google turn-by-turn GPS, is it available somehow?

My favorite game right now is Tilt to Live - awesome game. I'm also playing Zombie Smash and Angry Birds. Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies are all-time excellent though.

My favorite apps are:
Keeper - encrypted app for storing passwords and user names.
E-trade - trading on the go and easier than logging into E-Trade's website.
Chase - similar but for my bank and credit card
Shazam - when I like a song and don't know who sings it, this is great. Doesn't do classical music though.
Facebook - I'm not a facebook addict but it is handy for taking iPhone photos and uploading them easily.
Kindle - much easier to read on than I thought.
Skype - handy for the occassional international call
Urbanspoon - great for restaurant reviews - but wish it was easier to use.
Pandora - still my favorite streaming music app
Fluent News - an offline newsreader. I sync it at the airport and then can read news on the plane
Air Mouse - love this for controlling my home theater PC from the couch.
MotionGPS - use it for tracking speed and runs while skiing and on my bicycle as well. Wish I could multitask with it though
Trackthis - sends instant notifications about package status

Winterboard was eating my battery bad... 8 hours idle and 35% battery gone. Removed it and it's a noticeable difference - almost as good as stock, I'd say.

I'm using so many cool things now, it's amazing how perfect the phone feels now. And it was so easy... One click.

Getting some errors in Cydia now, I guess their servers are overloaded? Something about POSIX and connection refused for repo666.ultrasn0w.com - it's been like that for two days now.

Have you updated any of your Cydia apps?

Mint.com

Tap Tap Revenge - Original game was awesome. It's now even better. The Coldplay and Gaga ones are really fun.

Flight Control - Simple yet addicting game. How does Flight Director for Android even compare? How hard was it to draw some simple vector graphics and use it for a game? I'm amazed how good this game is on the iPhone.

TweetDeck - Simple Twitter app using a WebOS like interface. I love it.

Everything else that people said is pretty good.

I downloaded some core component updates earlier and a new SBSettings + toggle today. Went to a friend's place and everything was fine over Broadband, I checked on my 3G connection now and it's fine now - their servers were probably overloaded or something.
