It's been a few years since I looked into eReaders. Every once in a while I think it would be nice, then I forget about it again.

How well do the black & white readers do for technical books? Beside reading novels, another thing I want to do is be able to access books on things like cooking and recipes, hobbies, programming and engineering, and many of those have color photos and illustrations.

My Nook Glowlight seems to handle illustrations fairly well, but I don't think it would do a great job with fine details. It's also a fairly old model at this point. Prefer it greatly for straight-up reading though.

Color photos and illustrations?

Unless you can't tolerate reading on an LCD, stick with the 9.7" iPad or similar tablets.

My desktop.

Kindle, I believe, allows you to read your Kindle shit on some website attached to your account?

I got rid of my Kindle because I found out that I hate recharging batteries and dealing with handheld devices.

If you want to be able to see color pictures/diagrams, then I strongly recommend a full-featured tablet. A used iPad or Android -- but still recent enough that it runs the latest versions of whichever OS -- would be fine. The Kindle app works well on both platforms; for that matter Google Play Books does as well. If you have ePubs, then there are numerous ePub readers for both Android and iOS (though my favorite for iOS is the bundled iBooks).

Hmmm. Yeah, seems like two devices might be necessary if I really need color. Will probably get a Kindle of some kind primarily for reading in bed, then see if I still want/need a tablet.
