Michael Crichton. I'd say Jurassic Park and Lost World were two of the best books I've read. I've read almost all of Michael Crichton's books and they all get a 10/10. I'd say Airframe or Timeline would be my second choice of books from him.

I've always liked Crichton, as well. He and Robert Jordan (for the Wheel of Time series) are probably my favorite authors. Even though I've only read three books by him (the Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy), I like Timothy Zahn a lot, as well. And since I'm a Star Wars fan and he writes action-packed novels (plus I have one autographed by him), Michael A. Stackpole.

If you want something that's a little out there (but not by much), check out American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

Also, read The Alienist by Caleb Carr.

John Updike - Into the Beauty of the Lilies
V.S. Naipaul - A House for Mr. Biswas

Although, I'm pretty sure it will become Salman Rushdie after reading Midnight's Children - supposed to be an incredible book.

I'm not much of a book reader, but the books I read that I have liked the best were the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. Great set of books, especially liked The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. And Fahreinheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Crichton's last few bit it, IMHO.

Some sci-fi authors I like are:

Walter Jon Williams = Hardwired, Voice of the Whirlwind, Metropolitan, City on Fire

Hardwired is/was the BEST! I've written to Williams about a proposed Hardwired game that never came about and he seems like a real nice, friendly guy.

David Brin = The Postman (MUCH BETTER than the movie)

William Gibson = Burning Chrome and the Count Zero trilogy

Neal Stephenson = Snow Crash and The Diamond Age are both excellent

yeah, orwell too. But Orwell holds a special place in my heart, so I often forget to even include him.

Brilliant beyond brilliant.

James Clavell - Shogun
Wow, I can't believe someone else actually posted this before me. :Q:D Weird.

Anway, Clavell's "Shogun" is my favorite, followed closely by Tolkien's LOTR.

How can one have a favorite?
What kind of air is your favorite to breathe?

How about Shakespeare?

Loved the Dune series.
Loved The Lord of the Rings
Love Greek and Roman texts....
currently reading Aeschylus The Oresteian Trilogy
My most often reread is probably Suetonious' Twelve Caesars
Salinger is one of my favorites also, though personally I enjoy his short stories more than his novels.

I could go on and on and on.... I love reading and will read anything at all.... I'm willing to give anything a chance... the only thing I can't abide is romance novels... I hate them with a passion.

But there's so many.. I can't choose just one. :)

#1 would be Terry Goodkind - Wizards' First Rule, and anything else by him. :)
#2 R.A. Salvator... especially the Demon Wars, Dark Elf (Drizzt) and Ynis Aielle Series
#3 Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow & Thorn Trilogy

I think that's all of my favorites. :D

Edit:
These ones.
