I'm not much help, but I can tell you to steer away from scrolling banners, flashing text, or funny gifs.

Find a free template and then modify it. Do you have webhosting already? BTW, I would register a domain at namecheap.com

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind once we have all our sponsors firmed up and such. Right now, I just sort of need general tips. :)

I like lunar pages for one stop domain registration and hosting.
http://www.lunarpages.com/

Basically go there, pick a plan, click "buy", punch in your domain that you want, punch in your CC#, and hit "Submit". Give it 5 minutes and you have an email with all your login stuff.

A day later your domain name is fully propagated. Cheap and easy.

Can't help you with the web development. I'm a creatively impaired in that department. I just slap some crap together in front page and upload it :)

I use Powweb as a one-stop. Cheap and lots of bandwidth. Some tool links to mix and match with a forum to answer questions (not as good as here of course.)

DO NOT BUY YOUR DOMAIN FROM THE COMPANY THAT HOSTS IT

If you do this, you will not have access to your domain. This means that if the company goes under, starts having horrible support, just plain runs off, you will lose your domain and will not be able to get it back. The people above are complete and utter morons for even suggesting it.

QFT!

Fausto - PM me with what language you are thinking of scripting the web site with and I'll point you in the right direction and/or give you some pointers. :)

And you are a jerk.

Where is your proof? You can transfer a domain name to another company in such a situation. In fact, they would love to do it. In most cases, you buy it from your host, but they do it through another party. For example, Powwebs uses tucows.

Exactly, but in most cases the company would be in control of the domain. They would still have to transfer the domain. If you own the domain, you simply change the nameservers. If for instance Powweb were to go under, how would you transfer the domain? What is your Tucows login/password (I am assuming that Tucows follows the norm and has control of the domain). What would you do if your host disappeared? How long would you have to wait for them to transfer it?

Oh, and proof?

So once again, I say that you are a moron.

As SarcasticDwarf says, purchase your domain name from a separate registrar like Namecheap.com or GoDaddy.com. Never from your host, especially these lesser-known fly by night operations.

You want to install a simple little CMS (Content Management System), but honestly I'd say just install WordPress. It's extremely easy to use blogging software with a billion free templates, and will likely do what you want it to do.

Then what you really are saying is not to use an email hosted at the site address for the contact (which is the trap the one fell into in the link). With tucows, you need to know about this site Admin Change

And you are still a jerk.

The plan is to have a rider blog linked to each bio page, so I'll definitely keep the above in mind.

You could get Band in a Box and write your own version and make that MIDI for the win!
