Got a call from someone last night on behalf of the "xxxxxxxxx Police Benevolent Association".

Her: Hello sir, how are you tonight.

Me: Fine thanks.

Her: I'm calling on behalf of xPBA (can't recall the exact name) to raise funds for bulletproof vests for our brave officers....blah, blah, blah (long, sappy sales pitch).

Me: What's the name of your company again?

Her: The Police Benevolent...

Me: (interrupts) No, the company you actually work for.

Her: Oh, it's xxxx Marketing xxxx. (again, I can't recall the exact name)

Me: Could I ask what percentage of the proceeds you collect are actually passed on to the officers and their families?

Her: (much quieter now) Um...we....it's an 80/20 split.

Me: Which have keeps the 80%?

Her: Er...we do.

Me: So, you keep 80% of money people think they're giving to protect police officers and support the families of officers slain in the line of duty?

Her: Um, yes that's correct.

Me: That's pretty shameful, don't you think? Making money in the name of those who've given their lives to serve society?

Her: Thank you sir. *click*

Me: :D:D:D:

Most places calling to solicit funds for Worthy Charity X keep the majority of the money they take in. It's a disgusting scam. If you want to give money to the local PD, give it directly to them.

I think those PBA bullet proof vest types are the worst.

When I was in HS, I got a call from when and he went into his pitch and I said "I'm sorry, I'm only 16, I'm not authorized to make these kind of decisions for the house, please call back later."
And he says "Come on, you can just donate $30, there's no minimum, etc"
And I repeat, "I am 16 years old, not the head of the household, I cannot make this kind of decision and I do not have a credit card. Please call back later."
And then he says "OK, how about I just put you down for $15 pledge and we will send you a bill so that your parents can write the check."

"How about you put me down for NOTHING, DO NOT CALL BACK, TAKE MY NAME OFF YOUR LIST."

He threw away that sale. I wasn't just trying to be polite when I was asking him to call back....my parents still would have said "No, thanks" but at least they are the ones responsible for doing so.

He screwed that

Do the local police department even support such telemarketers? Do they even know their names are being used for such a scam?

They don't call on behalf of a specific PD, it's usually vaguely-official sounding name like Police Benevolent Association or similar.

I always contact the local police agency and let them know about it. Many times it's a completely unauthorized scam that they're running in the first place.

If you want to get rid of telemarketers really quick, always tell them you work for their direct competition. If AT&T calls, I tell them I work for Sprint, etc. It gets them everytime. They usually just hang up immediately. How can they compete with that? :D

I would have told them that I am a law enforcement officer (in this case, I actually am, but if I weren't, I'd do it anyway) and that I've NEVER seen a single dime of their money come to my department for new vests.

If they want to keep 80% of the money they raise for bulletproof vests, maybe we should declare open season on telemarketers. That way, at least, they'll have to spend the money they keep for the right hardware. :)

Truth in marketing.
