Faulty DIMM - RMA question - replace one or both?

My computer has been running fine since build (about 1 1/2 months ago) but suddenly does strange things (unable to run programs, restarts, etc.) over the weekend. I thought it was a virus so I formatted my HDD and tried to reinstall OS. But couldn't because kept getting error messages stating that it couldn't access this file and that file. I tried formatting again and same thing. I gave up!

Today, I talk to my tech guy at work and he thinks it's a faulty memory(s) and tells me to run Memtest. I run Memtest with both DIMMs and within 10 minutes I have approx. 200,000 errors. I take out one of the DIMMs and errors galore. I replace the DIMM with the other one and no errors whatsoever after over an hour. I'm no genius but me thinks the error-riddled DIMM is faulty.

I call Corsair and they are going to RMA the faulty DIMM. Do you recommend I replace both DIMMs or just the bad one? If I replace just the one will they still be "matched" and act like a set?

Why has the computer / memory performed well up until now? Is this normal for a DIMM to go "bad" after a period of use? Should I run Memtest on the "good" DIMM for a longer duration just to make sure?

I would RMA the bad one unless it was bought as a matched pair. If they were I would call their RMA dept and ask what they recommend.

I had 2 gigs of corsair ram replaced 3 years after purchase.. it was for servers and had to be installed in pairs.. i got 2 new sticks.. so might as well..

Happened to me a couple weeks ago. Although I didn't bother to identify which stick was bad. Since I bought as a pair, I tested as a pair. If they don't work, I send back as a pair.

The good = Corsair warranty
The bad = 1.5 months of operation

Everybody keeps preaching Corair VS. I guess the lifetime warranty is a good selling point. 😛

better check on those life time.. many time it means life of the product in production.. after production is out.. you're sol
