An economist is suggesting that airlines should charge based on weight. This makes sense, since the cost for you to fly is tied to how much you weigh.

I 100% agree with this. I think there should be a base rate to fly + a charge for each pound over X amount pounds. That actually wouldn't mean that only fatties necessarily pay more. You could be 6'5", 250 pounds of muscle and still need to pay more. There is no reason a 112 pound woman should pay the same ticket price as Andre the Giant. You could also be 4'9", 140 pounds and still pay a low rate.

People would input their weight at time of ordering a ticket and be charged accordingly. At the airport they would be weighed and refunded/charged extra for the variation in their reported weight.

A few other thoughts:

Airlines say that an extra 2.2 pounds of weight costs them an extra $3,000 of fuel per year. All flight attendants should fit a specific profile and there shouldn't be any overweight or giant flight attendants on flights, as that cost is passed to customers.

Passengers should have to pay for the weight of their carry-on bag.

It would also be nice to see the reported weights of people who choose seats when choosing your seats. I would love the seat selector to point out that 26C is a 215 pound person and that 24A is holding a 120 pound person. I can choose my seat accordingly.

OP, let's make this assumption.

Say you get some kind of disease which disables you from physical activity or it changes your metabolism and you end up gaining weight.

Read your original post again. How do you feel about all that?

I am 6'5" and if I'm paying more, I want a fucking seat I don't have to fold in half to sit in.

Let the rest of you manlets, midgets and waifs get the child seats you deserve.

They should do this to everyone. Plane tickets are a certain price per pound---just like shipping a package.

Holy god not only do we have to deal with the TSA bullshit. You also want us to deal with height and weight bullshit from the airline?

That's not the airline's fault.

This is the only fair solution. The last flight I was on there was a woman and her husband trying to get into their seats i was behind them and they stopped my from going in. It took them 12 minutes to sit down, both giant land whales. Fat people should also pay more for healthcare just like smokers or drug users.

I feel that we are using an objective measure. I feel that we are human cargo and should pay according to how much we weigh. No problems here. It is targeting fat people per se. It is saying you pay per pound.

You should work in accounting. You'd be perfect for it.

Those seats are called "first class" and you are welcome to them. Why should we have to pay because you are large? Big package pays more. Or don't fucking fly.

I said nothing about charging for height. Just weight. A 6'2" 170 pound man isn't going to take up much room. a 5'6" 170 pounder may.

Pay per the pound since the cost of flying is related to the weight of the cargo. And yes, weigh all your shit too. These assholes with 3 carry on bags piss me off.

a thread judging other people on ATOT? stop the presses

This is not a judgement. It is logic. I think a 200 lb athlete that is 9% body fat should pay more than a 150 pound fatty that is 35% body fat. You are cargo and should be treated as such.

Tell me this, how does FedEx determine their shipping price? Is it the same for every package, or is it based on some other objective metric?

Then you eat less. I know thats a complex thing to some but it works.

Just because you don't workout does not mean you eat the same or more.
