An economist is suggesting that airlines should charge based on weight. This makes sense, since the cost for you to fly is tied to how much you weigh.
I 100% agree with this. I think there should be a base rate to fly + a charge for each pound over X amount pounds. That actually wouldn't mean that only fatties necessarily pay more. You could be 6'5", 250 pounds of muscle and still need to pay more. There is no reason a 112 pound woman should pay the same ticket price as Andre the Giant. You could also be 4'9", 140 pounds and still pay a low rate.
People would input their weight at time of ordering a ticket and be charged accordingly. At the airport they would be weighed and refunded/charged extra for the variation in their reported weight.
A few other thoughts:
Airlines say that an extra 2.2 pounds of weight costs them an extra $3,000 of fuel per year. All flight attendants should fit a specific profile and there shouldn't be any overweight or giant flight attendants on flights, as that cost is passed to customers.
Passengers should have to pay for the weight of their carry-on bag.
It would also be nice to see the reported weights of people who choose seats when choosing your seats. I would love the seat selector to point out that 26C is a 215 pound person and that 24A is holding a 120 pound person. I can choose my seat accordingly.
