Father-ln-Law's eMachine died...gave it to me

Everything powers up when I don't have it plugged into the board...

The computer doesn't post at all...even with everything unhooked and just leaving the processor, and video...no beeping with RAM out.

So I think it is the board...

I am curious if I can just go and get any other board and swap it out...reload windows and be back up and running...

OR

Do I need ot have a specific board for emachines ? I wouldn't think so...but that is why I am asking.

Any advice is appreciated.

Determine what kind of cpu it is and check newegg for suitable substitutes. Read the reviews to see if any were used for e-machine substitutes.

If it's a socket A board, there are several comments about replacing e-machine mobos. Prices were from $17 to $43 with one nf2 for $77.

the processor is an Athlon XP 2100,

Do you by chance have a link to the reviews you mention ? I would love to take a looksie

If the computer is anything like Compaq, just get a micro atx socket A board that the cpu works with. I had a compaq, and the board died, I just replaced it with a Abit AN8 and put everything in a full atx case. No problems.

If possible find a friend with a board that you can test the components in because there is a possibility that it is a dead CPU as well/instead. If it is the motherboard you can just swap one out. The drawbacks are that Windows XP will die and the restore (if not just an OEM install CD) may not run.

Well I have a copy of XP that I can use...he gave it to me..so I am not too worried about that.

and I have an extra processor laying around...and XP Athlon 1600 so I am covered there.

If I can get it running again for 30 to 50 bucks I should be good

The eMachine mode is W2260 if that makes a difference

I replaced a mb about four months ago(emachine with a athlon 2400+ xp chip). Mb were about $26 bucks a pop at microcenter and had to change the power supply, too! Sold everything and made a few bucks...

What model MB did you get...if you have a link i would appreciate it...also what made you get a new power supply ? just because or was the eMachine PS dead ? Or just good practice based on eMachine PS's not being good ?

Thanks in advance,

You shouldnt have to reinstall windows. XP will invalidate if a number of components are changed--not just one. I have done major swapping of components and never had to reinstall.

BTW, in the states (or anywhere else for that matter) we dont add a "space" between the end of a sentence and the puncuation. Get it?

Thanks for the info albeit useless to me...I don't give a rat?s ass about the XP install...nor your wealth of knowledge about English...

Go impress the 4h Chicks or something.

Newegg.com (e-retailer)has cust. reviews avaliable for most of the parts it sells. I try to use them or resellerratings.com for some cust. feedback about products and companies.

Here is a link to socket A mobos from newegg today.

The refitted PCChips LU118 (ugh) for $18 may be the most likely to work with that era processors and components. The Sis based chips have comments in the reviews that some don't work with the odd numbered (2100) speed chips, so check the reviews.
