My father-in-law died this afternoon. He was 92. He had a stroke last week and died in his sleep in the hospital this afternoon. At least it was painless and an illness of short duration. We talked just last week about the stock market and his favorite John Wayne movies.
I just wanted to tell you about him to, in a way, celebrate a good life. He was born on the fourth of July, 1914 - one of 9 children on a farm in Iowa. Only went through the 8th grade and then joined the Army when he was of age. He fought in WWII in Germany and also in Korea and rose to the highest enlisted rank available at that time. During his 31 years in service he got married, fathered 4 children, finished school and made sure all 4 of his children finished college.
After retiring he and my mother-in-law became real estate brokers and they bought and then rented out houses. He did all the repair work on the houses by himself until he was in his 80s and decided it was too taxing physically. Until October of last year he lived with my mother-in-law in their house with only minimal assistance. They have been married since 1940.
He was a good man who lived a good life. Nothing extraordinary that will be celebrated on TV or noticed by any except his family. But what we need are a lot more men just like him.
