Yes, that's what all of the Dynasty Warriors games are like. A lot of the fun in the game (in my opinion) comes from choosing a character and leveling them up. So literally, the Gundam Musou game took out the fun part of "souping up" your character. You also could not select anyone other than Heero and part of the fun is selecting a character you think you'll enjoy. Kind of like when I played Dynasty Warriors 3, I used Zhang He, the very effeminate character (no jokes about this :|!) and my brother always chose Zhou Yu. We eventually ended up unlocking every character (including Lu Bu) and leveling them all up.
The demo may've been a bit disappointing, because the premise of being a gundam from the AC series is that you're waaaaay overpowered. So the little peon mobile suits should be nothing but cannon fodder and should just be mowed down. This was possible when using Wing Zero's special, but other times, I found it lackluster. But it should also be pointed out that
when you are level 1, you have almost no combos! Just like in Dynasty Warriors, you gain combos that involve different buttons and different amounts.. all of these combos are more suited for certain things. Such as if you played the combos correctly on Wing Zero, he had a good front clearing combo and a good side clearing gun-using combo.
Another issue may've been the relatively slow pace. You could just skip over guys, but the natural need to kill every officer/general and take over every zone makes you want to simply dominate, but this takes awhile. This could also take awhile in the original Dynasty Warriors, but in there, you could find horses or if you had a fast character (like Zhang He), you could simply run to your destination fast enough. In Gundam Musou, Zero can jump and turn into Plane Mode and fly (for a limited time, there's a meter) quickly in whatever direction you want. The issue I found with this is that the camera position was kind of poor and you practically navigated with your mini-map.
In other words, I'm predicting the real game will be much more fun than the demo as you'll actually be able to level (imagine a RPG without being able to even level!) and get new gear as well as play as different characters. I want to play as Gundam Epyon and maybe Gundam Double X from Gundam X. As long as I got moon power, I'm invincible in that Gundam !
EDIT: The difficultly can also depend on what difficulty you chose. Also, if the fodder really fought back, the game would get increasingly difficult to almost an unplayable point at times and they'd have to scale down the enemies significantly to avoid you being decimated as the enemies would completely surround you.
I'm not sure how I feel about their lock-up system in this game. In Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, when you locked up with your opponent, you had to mash the attack button and whoever had the upper hand would cause a knock-back on their opponent. In Dynasty Warriors you just kind of saw which player was getting pushed back, in Samurai Warriors, there was a bar.
You also might fancy the PSP version of Samurai Warriors more than the standard version. The PSP version is mostly played on a grid and requires
A LOT more tact than the standard version. In fact, if you literally don't do the right moves at the right time, you will most likely lose. Knowing how to use your special scrolls was essential in that game as all it took was a turn or two for your commander to die and you could be all the way across the map. In the normal game, they probably would not die nearly this fast and you could come in for the save no matter where you were.
