Fatal exception error in IE

My freinds computer is running win98se and all the latest updates, and whenever you go to certain sites on the computer, like aol.com an error pops up (fatal exception error for explorer.exe) and explorer unloads and your stuck with nothing but the option cltrl+alt+del. I set all the IE 6.0 settings to default, and i closed every other program and no luck. I dont want to have to reinstall windows 98, is there a quicker way to fix this issue?
